A new Minecraft mod has been released which makes it so that when players mine blocks, there is a chance for them to gain items that the blocks wouldn't normally yield, including some pretty rare drops. As one of the most successful releases in gaming history and even being an ideal Christmas gift for gamers, Mojang's sandbox title has provided hundreds of hours of entertainment for millions of people across the globe, with the ability to unleash limitless creative potential.

While mining is one of the core elements of Minecraft, hence the first half of the game's name, it really comes into its own when it comes to the crafting part. For well over a decade now, fans have been only too keen to show off some of their projects, be they elaborate structures created from the imagination, reconstructions of buildings from the real world, or some insanely complex redstone contraptions. There is no end to people's creativity. And then there are the community mods that only increase the game's longevity.

As spotted by PCGamesN, CurseForge user GamerPotion has released a modification for Minecraft called "DarkMining." In essence, the mod improves on the item drop feature of the vanilla game by giving a chance for more interesting or rare items to fall from broken blocks. An image handily gives an overview of what players can expect when they mine using the mod. For example, breaking a standard dirt block has a rare chance of dropping an iron ingot, while a stone block could drop lapis lazuli. There's also a chance to gain food, with netherrack possibly yielding beetroot when mined.

It's even possible to gain diamond from sand or dirt, though it is very rare to do so. Anyone who's played the game knows that diamonds are one of Minecraft's most sought after minerals, allowing for the crafting of some interesting items, including strong armor sets. Using "DarkMining" means there are now greater opportunities to mine diamonds without having to seek them out in deep, dark caves. Again, it is rare to find one in a dirt block, admittedly, but it sounds like it's worth installing the mod for a chance to gain some different block drops.

Modding can really switch things up in Minecraft, with some custom mods almost turning it into a different game entirely. Of course, the vanilla experience is huge enough to keep players engaged in the blocky world for a long time, but the addition of custom content is just one of the reasons Minecraft is still going strong to this day.

Minecraft is available on 3DS, Mobile, PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
