Highlights

  • Many mob vote losers have interesting concepts that deserve inclusion sooner in Minecraft to enhance gameplay.
  • Some mobs like the barnacle and the great hunger were permanently eliminated from entering Minecraft.
  • The iceologer, glare, rascal, and crab offer unique abilities and challenges that could improve player experience.

One of the most infamous parts of the Minecraft community, the semi-annual mob vote certainly grabs the attention of many players, for better and worse. The few vote winners so far haven't always captured the adoration of fans, especially with the tremendous loser's bracket having quite a few conceptually great mobs that deserve their time in the game.

Minecraft: Biome Vote Winners, Ranked

Minecraft fans were given the chance to vote for brand new biomes to be added to the game, but which of the winners gave out the best?

While many of the mob vote winners were undeniably the best of their respective bunch, a handful of the losers were easily more interesting or useful than the mob voted in. With nearly every vote loser being confirmed to join Minecraft at some vague, undetermined point in the future, a few of the mobs definitely need inclusion sooner rather than later.

10 The Barnacle And The Great Hunger

Mobs Forever Lost To The Vote

Minecraft 2017 Mob Vote

The first losers of the first mob vote, and the vote with the highest stakes, Mob A and Mob C, known also as the barnacle and the great hunger, are some of the few mobs forever lost to time. Unlike every mob vote following after, the loser mobs of the first vote were permanently eliminated from ever entering Minecraft, at least design-wise, as the intended effects of these hostile mobs have been incorporated in some capacity.

The barnacle, designed as a dangerous squid-mimic monster, would have dragged players down into the sea, now seen with magma blocks in underwater ravines. Similarly, the enchant-removing function of the grindstone translated the idea of the great hunger, though certainly more convenient. Considering the phantom was the winner of the first vote, many players would certainly prefer either mob instead.

9 The Hovering Inferno

Found New Life In A Spin-Off

Minecraft Dungeons Wildfire Hovering Inferno

While the hovering inferno, also known as Mob D, was another casualty of the original mob vote, it surprisingly found a new life not in the main game, but instead in one of the more successful Minecraft spin-offs. Reborn as the wildfire, this mob with many names could've been a great addition following the Nether update.

Initially intended to spawn with normal blazes in the Nether and attack with a shockwave, the wildfire ended up in Minecraft Dungeons with a similar moveset. Although this armored blaze cannot enter the main game, its inclusion in Dungeons at least gives some life to this dangerous mob.

8 Penguin

The Dolphin's Bird Alternate

Minecraft Mob Penguin

The penguin is one of the more underwhelming mob vote losers, as beyond a unique design, it doesn't seem to add anything actually new to the game. While adding new and varied mobs is always a bonus for the world within Minecraft, the supposed special power of the penguin doesn't add too much.

Minecraft: 10 Items That Deserve An Update

With an abundance of items in Minecraft, a few of them are long overdue for a small (or bigger) update. Here's which items need a facelift.

Much like the dolphin increasing the swimming speed of nearby players, the penguin would add a speed boost for players sailing in boats. This is certainly a helpful boost, but compared to the mobs it lost to, there's not much missing in the game without this flightless bird.

7 Tuff Golem

A Glorified Statue

Minecraft Tuff Golem

One of the two golem losers in the mob vote, the tuff golem has an interesting concept for building-focused players. The addition of a living statue fits into the general aesthetic of Minecraft, but compared to other mob options in votes, it's not all that exciting.

While having a magical and mobile base decoration certainly adds to the fun of base design, the whole gimmick of the tuff golem begins and ends at that idea. An item frame essentially captures the same function.

6 Copper Golem

A Redstone-Compatible Glorified Statue

Tiny Jens and Tiny Agnes introducing the copper golem for the Minecraft Mob Vote

The tuff golem's robotic sibling, the copper golem feels similar to its stony counterpart but offers something for Redstone-minded players as well. While the copper golem doesn't hold items, it still functions as both a living statue and a normal statue once oxidized, as well as with the desire to constantly press copper buttons.

A random-number-generator and a fun decoration for all varieties of bases, the copper golem's concept is interesting, but like the other golem, doesn't necessarily do anything special or different enough beyond the decoration aspect. The random button pressing is intriguing, but the same execution can be achieved by a chicken walking on and off a pressure plate.

5 Iceologer

A Reason To Reach The Peak

Minecraft Iceologer

One of the few hostile mobs featured in the mob vote, the iceologer would have offered a challenge to the newly updated mountain biome, as well as a crossover with Minecraft Dungeons. While the full details of what this chilly villager, sadly not called a "chillager," would have attacked players with is somewhat unknown beyond assumptions of giant ice blocks, the addition of more magic items for the player to use could have been great.

Since the iceologer summons ice blocks that drop on players in Dungeons, either a magic rod or similar weapon for players to use after defeating this nasty mountain dweller could have added more options for weapons in general, especially magic tools.

4 Glare

A Helpful Grouch

Screenshot from a Minecraft Live teaster trailer showing a new mob called The Glare.

Existing predominantly as a way for Bedrock players to deal with monster spawning before technical changes came for low lighting, the glare offered a way for players to instantly know whether a dark area was dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn in. While a seemingly obvious problem to solve, the inverse power of the glare could be just as useful.

The implication of the glare's tantrum pointing out a too-dark area was for the player to light up the spot with torches, but for players building mob grinders or similar, knowing when an area is sufficiently dark is just as handy.

3 Rascal

A Lifesaver In The Mines

Minecraft Rascal

Losing out to the sniffer in a landslide, the rascal is a fascinating mob concept that solves a dangerously common problem for mining and exploration-focused players. Offering players items including an iron pickaxe, this mob could easily save players who find themselves trapped underground without a pickaxe.

Delving into caves isn't for faint-hearted Minecraft players. Luckily, these tips should help you during your spelunking expeditions.

While it's technically possible for players to punch their way up from underground caves and mineshafts, it's in no way convenient. More effective as a potential way to mine diamonds if an appropriate pickaxe wasn't brought to the mines, the rascal could be a great mini-challenge for a reasonable reward.

2 Moobloom

In Memoriam Of Minecraft Earth

Minecraft Moobloom

The moobloom may have been a first-round loser in the 2020 mob vote, but considering the winner of the vote was the glow squid, that doesn't really mean much. Adding a new flower and interaction with bees, this golden cow variant could have impacted mob interactions in general.

While the moobloom might not have the pizazz of other mobs that directly affect the player's options in Minecraft, it would have been a far better representative of Minecraft Earth than the glow squid. The interaction between it and bees may have been vaguely described, but the concept of more mobs interacting positively could have easily led to more ways for resource gathering.

1 Crab

Opportunity For Increased Player Power

Minecraft Mob Crab

A recent vote loser, the crab's potential to increase the effectiveness of the player is reflected in its popularity in the vote. Beaten by the armadillo by less than 10% of the vote, the crab and its tremendous claw would have increased the player's block placing distance.

While the full extent of the claw's utility can't be known, the general concept of players being able to place blocks further away could easily change several facets of the game. Making building easier, altering PvP dynamics, and potentially affecting how far away players can break blocks, the crab is a sorely missed addition, even with the armadillo being a solid winner.
