By exploring the world of Minecraft, you can get many valuable resources and materials, including Obsidian. It is usually used to build a portal to the Nether, but it often also serves as a good explosion-proof material. So next, we are going to tell you about the best ways to get Obsidian in Minecraft. Obsidian is a valuable resource, and it's impossible to have too much of it (or any resource for that matter).

How to Create Obsidian in Minecraft

Obsidian in Minecraft

To create Obsidian on your own, you need to get the Lava source to merge with Water. However, if the Water comes into contact with the Flowing Lava, it will form a Cobblestone. If you fill the lava lake with Water, you will create a considerable amount of Obsidian. Thus, with a Diamond Pickaxe, a source of Lava and Water, you can get a decent amount of this resource even on the surface.

If you are more used to travelling and manual digging in caves, you can find Obsidian in the following spots:

  • Deep in the caves
  • In the destroyed Nether portals
  • In canyons

How to Get Obsidian

Piglins in Minecraft

The most common ways to get Obsidian are the following:

  • Get it with tools
  • By trading with Piglins

Obtaining obsidian with tools is quite difficult because it can take a lot of time. To be precise, it will take you 9.4 seconds if your diamond pickaxe doesn't have any efficiency enchantments. You can use potions or enchant your tools to make it faster, but it's much more fun to blow up obsidian if you can do it. The only explosion that can destroy obsidian is the blue Wither head blow. Considering the resources you need to summon this boss, this method of mining obsidian is not recommended. Instead, it's better to go to the mine, find a lava lake, and pour water on it to turn it all into obsidian, and then comfortably mine it without the risk of burning.

If you have managed to get to Nether, then there is a much easier way for you to get this durable material. Since Minecraft version 1.16, players can trade with Piglins. For one gold bar, Piglin gives one item. You have a chance of ~8.71% (Java version) or ~9.46% (Bedrock version) to get a block of Obsidian from them.
