There are still many lingering questions about the trends that will continue as the industry moves into the next generation of consoles. With the increase in game prices starting as a new trend for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series platforms, the industry is already starting to see change. One area that many still ponder about is how cross-play will be utilized on the recently released hardware, but for now at least previous generation consoles are making sure to keep it alive.

Developer Mojang confirms that Minecraft Dungeons will be getting its cross-play update soon. The developer announced via the game's official Twitter account that Minecraft Dungeons will get its previously revealed cross-play update next week on November 17.

The cross-play update will work with all versions of the game meaning that PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC players will all be loot hunting together. With both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles featuring backwards compatibility, the upcoming cross-play update won't be limited to the previously mentioned consoles. With Minecraft Dungeons egging on the Diablo-esque loot system, having players across consoles be able to join in on the quest for more loot is definitely a bonus.

The announcement the cross-play update coincides with the impending release of the Minecraft Dungeons Howling Peaks DLC which is set to release in December. While many players assumed the update for cross-platform play would release alongside the DLC, Mojang opted to give players an early taste before the third DLC expansion is set to drop. With Howling Peaks introducing a bevy of new content including missions, items, and enemies, having new friends assist in the struggle for better equipment is a welcomed addition.

Cross-play became one of the most requested features for any cooperative or multiplayer title over the eighth generation of consoles. With Sony confirming the PlayStation 4 will support cross-play on all games towards the end of 2019, it cemented that the feature would be mainstay. With backwards compatibility being significantly touted feature of the recently released Xbox Series consoles and PlayStation 5, it is very likely that publishers will continue to utilize merging different platform players.

As Minecraft Dungeons finally introduces cross-play next week, it adds a new incentive for players to go back into the blocky world of top-down RPG action. While the update may be overshadowed due to the very recent launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, it will release just before the former launches outside of major territories on the scheduled November 19 release date.

Minecraft Dungeons is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
