One of the oldest mobs and iconic pets in Minecraft, the Wolf mob has finally received a much-needed and much-wanted facelift. Beyond all the technical changes to the Wolf, as well as incredible buffs thanks to the Armadillo's victory in the mob vote, the actual design of the Wolf has been lacking compared to its familiar rival, the Cat. Ever since Cats received a wide variety of variants in the 1.14 update, the demand for Wolves to have a similar variety of skins has remained consistent.
Minecraft Adds New Weapon in Latest Snapshot
Minecraft adds a new snapshot, and players can try out a new weapon with a powerful special attack, along with new items and improvements.
In the upcoming 1.20.5 update, Wolves will have at least eight new skins found only in specific biomes across the Minecraft world. With so many biomes that the skin variants can possibly appear in, quite a few Wolves are far rarer, or at least harder to find, than others.
9 Woods
The Most Common Option
- Found In: The Forest Biome
- Spawn In Packs Of Four
Within one of the most common land biomes in Minecraft, the Woods Wolf is easily the most common type of wolf players will come across. While the brown fur of the Woods Wolf skin blends in perfectly with the oak wood trees scattered and growing throughout the Forest biome, the presence of the Wolves will be hard to miss.
Along with being in such a common biome, Woods Wolves spawn in groups of four, allowing players to get several Wolves quickly. This size of mob also makes it easier to find the Wolves, as their noise and numbers will be simpler for players to hone in on in the Forest.
8 Pale
The Classic Option
- Found In: The Taiga Biome
- Spawn In Packs Of Four
The original, one and only Wolf skin, the now named the Pale Wolf is found in Taiga biomes, most notable for the numerous spruce trees that dot the landscape and cover the sky. Found alongside Foxes and berry bushes, this new home for one of the oldest mob designs in Minecraft works perfectly for it.
Appearing in packs of four, the classic Wolf can easily be found within the dark brown and pale green landscape, especially at night, when Skeletons are sent running from the hungry hounds. Much like the original Cat textures and designs, the continued existence of a Minecraft classic mob with new options is a perfect way to update older features in the game.
7 Ashen
One Of Many Taiga Biome Wolves
- Found In: The Snowy Taiga Biome
- Spawn In Packs Of Four
A husky-like version of the Wolf, the Ashen Wolf variant is found in a repeated biome type for numerous Wolf skins. While there's a whole array of Taiga biomes, with many more subsets, the Snowy Taiga is home to the Ashen Wolf only.

Minecraft fans were given the chance to vote for brand new biomes to be added to the game, but which of the winners gave out the best?
Similar to the classic Wolf, but with a gray overcoat, the Ashen Wolf appears in the simple-to-spot Snowy biomes in groups of four, sticking out even more against the stark white landscape. Since it's practically impossible to miss a Snowy biome, a Snowy Taiga in particular, finding an Ashen Wolf isn't much harder.
6 Black
A Tale Of Two Taigas

The self-explanatory Black Wolf is in an interesting position. While it is, like many Wolves, found in a Taiga biome variant, there's an extra detail to which biome it spawns in that creates quite an annoying difference. The Black Wolf is found in what is referred to as the Old Growth Pine Taiga biome, which is essentially identical to another biome where another Wolf variant is found, save for a few small details.
Thankfully, for players trying to find companionship with the Black Wolf, their design is definitely an easy detail to spot in a mostly brown biome. While the number of Black Wolves that can spawn isn't too high, the chance of finding up to four at once is a pretty good trade-off.
5 Chestnut
The Power Of Camouflage

The Chestnut Wolf and the Black Wolf are in a very interesting spot compared to the other Wolf variant options, entirely because of what biome they spawn in. Obviously, the actual look of each Wolf makes it hard to mistake one for the other, but on the flip side, the biomes each of them spawn in are basically identical.
The Old Growth Spruce Taiga biome is where the Chestnut Wolf calls home, which is distinctly similar to the Old Growth Pine Taiga biome, home to the Black Wolf. While there is a technical difference between the biomes that involves their temperature, the actual way for players to tell the Taigas apart is in the design of their giant trees. For the Black Wolf, the giant trees only have leaves at the very top, whereas the Chestnut Wolf is found in the biome where the massive trees have leaves all down the trunk.
4 Spotted
Armadillo Synergy

While finding a Savanna biome is a little tricky, finding a Spotted Wolf should be pretty straightforward. Beyond their bright and bold design, these Wolves also spawn in huge groups of up to eight.

Minecraft hasn't changed much about the way food works, but an update could provide some exciting new challenges.
Conveniently for players searching for these Wolves, Armadillos spawn in the same biome, making obtaining both a Wolf and plenty of Wolf Armor a one-stop journey. Since Armadillos spawn in numbers of two to three, gathering plenty of Scute takes no time at all. Much like these colorful Wolves, finding an Armadillo, also known as a "Big Brown Waddling Cube," isn't too difficult once a Savanna has been located.
3 Striped
Something Good In The Badlands

- Spawn In Packs Of Between Four And Eight
A Wolf variant that borrows from the more feline Hyena, the Striped Wolf is appropriately found in the hot and sunny Badlands, specifically in the Wooded Badlands. With Wooded Badlands being slightly harder to find than the vast red sand deserts of the usual Mesa biomes, the Striped Wolf tends to hide at the top of the Terracotta Mountains.
Outside of the Striped Wolf being found in the woods atop the Badland plateaus, the Armadillo also spawns in the Badlands, making it a good biome for players searching for a Wolf and planning to craft some Wolf Armor.
2 Rusty
A Tropical Wolf

- Spawn In Packs Of Between Two And Four
Along with a whole plethora of other mobs found in Jungle biomes, the Rusty Wolf joins the roster, specifically in the Sparse Jungle biome, often found at the edges of other Jungle biomes.
With the large amount of foliage, mobs, and trees in Jungle biomes, actually spotting a Rusty Wolf may be trickier than other Wolves. Between ruling out the other mobs spawning in and, as the Wolf has a similar color to Jungle tree trunks, spotting the Wolves themselves, finding a pack of Rusty Wolves is no easy task. At the very least, the Rusty Wolf spawns in groups of up to four, so it won't be too hard to grab a few once players track them down.
1 Snowy
The Lone Wolf Of The Mountain
- Found In: The Grove Biome
- Spawn As A Single Wolf
Perhaps the rarest Wolf variant introduced so far, the Snowy Wolf has spawn conditions that befit the somewhat legendary feel of a pure white Wolf atop a mountain.
Only spawning in as a single, lone mob, the Snowy Wolf is also only found in Grove biomes on top of mountains, putting it in a biome that's definitely out of the way for players trying to explore efficiently. Beyond that, the Snowy Wolf certainly lives up to its title, as it blends in perfectly with its environment, just to make it even harder to find.
