Minecraft is by no means a horror game, but with the help of mods, anything is possible. Adding in new mobs or mechanics can certainly change the way the game feels and make it much creepier, but without significant aesthetic changes, the world will still feel all too happy and bright. That's where texture packs come in.

Horror texture packs for Minecraft are not just great during Halloween, but also when players want an actually frightening atmosphere for their adventure map or modded world. And even if no other mods are active, trying out a creepy texture pack can make everything feel new and fresh again. With these Minecraft horror texture packs, even going out to farm crops can make a player shake in their diamond boots.

7 Last Days

Minecraft Last Days

The apocalypse is here. Players can safely forget about the green pastures of the game with this bleak, dark, and truly terrible texture pack that turns Minecraft into a hostile post-apocalyptic radiation-riddled environment.

The world looks practically unrecognizable. Water has taken on a dirty, muddy appearance, and grass has lost its vibrant shades. It's perfect for any zombie survival adventure map or even for those who just want some post-apocalyptic horror into their game.

6 T42

Minecraft T42

T42 might not aspire to be a horror texture pack specifically, but something about its textures makes it incredibly dark and unnerving for players. The hostile mobs in particular have such high definition faces that T42 may as well be a full-blown horror experience.

Overall, most of the textures are a bit more detailed, bringing in a nice dose of realism into Minecraft. But it's that realism in particular that makes this pack so spooky. Caves are probably the biggest area that is changed drastically by this pack. It's too bad this one is only for 1.14 versions of the game.

5 BloodCraft

Minecraft BloodCraft

Minecraft has the appearance of a retro game, which is why implementing old-school horror and retro game textures is no problem at all. BloodCraft does just that and takes most of its inspiration and appearance from the 1996 title Blood, made by Monolith.

For those unfamiliar with the game, think of it like Diablo 1 or Diablo 2. The similarities are definitely there, more or less. It has a nice, dark, and medieval aesthetic perfect for any vampire-themed horror adventure. As of now, the pack is available for 1.16 game versions.

4 Doom Craft

Minecraft Doom Craft

Speaking of retro games: Doom. The series was known for being horrible, but in a good way, which empowered players to take control of the demons of darkness. Now, players can experience that same feeling in Minecraft through this Doom-inspired horror texture pack.

The biggest changes are definitely seen in the hostile mobs, which now have a distinct, hellish appearance. The Nether dimension in particular will look fantastic with this texture pack and get every player in the mood for some good old-fashioned Doom action.

3 The Asphyxious

Minecraft Asphyxious

Medieval, dark, and terrifying, The Asphyxious has become infamous among Minecraft texture packs due to its incredibly creepy yet gorgeous visuals. For players who want something new that can be used in the 1.17 version of the game, this is easily the go-to texture pack for players.

A lot changes with this pack, but it still maintains the basic overall appearance of blocks. Paintings have a new creepy range of images on them, and some blocks have a strange, dark, almost Alice in Wonderland-type eeriness to them. It's absolutely fantastic for building horror-themed Minecraft mansions, so builders will definitely enjoy this one.

2 Nightmare Before Christmas

Minecraft Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton's classic Halloween-Christmas movie has such a unique aesthetic that it's no surprise it served as inspiration for a Minecraft texture pack. Players will be able to travel into Halloween Town with this texture pack, with mobs as their favorite Nightmare Before Christmas characters and significant environmental changes.

This pack also gets bonus points for actually adding in new painting textures as well, all perfect for that creepy Halloween theme. The most glaring change players will notice immediately is the appearance of grass blocks, which will now be purple with curls on the side. While this isn't a super scary pack, it's a nice in-between for players who can't handle anything too dark and frightening.

1 Silent Hill

Minecraft Silent Hill

On to something super scary: a Silent Hill texture pack. The game franchise still holds the crown as one of the masters of horror, and for good reason. Some of the worst enemies and scenes have stemmed from the series and inspired popular culture over the last two decades. Now, players can also experience the horrors of the misty Silent Hill in Minecraft.

The textures look as if they were pulled straight out of the game. Bleak, dirty, and rusty, all of them are reminiscent of the worn-out appearance of Silent Hill. Pair this up with a shader pack, and it will actually be terrifying to set a foot outside at night time when the darkness and fog are the thickest. The catch? This texture pack is only out for 1.8, but it's still worth going back just to experience it.

Minecraft was released on November 18, 2011, and is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Raspberry Pi, Wii U, and Apple TV.
