At the very start of Miitopia, players are tasked with picking a job for their character. In the beginning there are only six to choose from, but by the end of the game players can have up to 14 different jobs unlocked. In most games that employ the job system, players are able to switch freely between any of the jobs that they've unlocked, but the player's choice at the start of the game matters a bit more than usual here. The game does allow players to switch jobs to any of the ones they have previously unlocked, but the process for doing so is a bit complicated.

The job system was pioneered by Final Fantasy 3 and then perfected in later entries in that franchise and by Bravely Default. Miitopia uses something similar to this job system but with its own tweaks. Players will eventually be able to try out all the jobs, but not at the start of the game.

Essentially, at the end of every chapter the player comes face to face with the Dark Lord. He seals the player's power away, stripping them of their job and forcing them to start over with a new one. This happens at the end of chapter one and chapter 2, but not in chapter 3 or ever again after that. In the first two chapters, players are stuck with whatever jobs they chose for the entirety of those chapters, only being able to switch once they have their power sealed away and pick a new job.

At the very end of the game, players will find themselves in an area called Karkaton. At the inn here, players can switch between any of the jobs that they have unlocked. At this point in the story they should have the six starting jobs, three for beating chapter one, and three for beating chapter two. It's also possible for players to have unlocked the Vampire job and the Elf job by this point. From here on out, players just need to visit the inn in order to switch jobs, and any jobs that were previously sealed away will maintain their job progress once they are unlocked again.

With that in mind, players should carefully pick one of Miitopia's job they will enjoy when starting the game. This is even more important when picking a job the second time, as they will be stuck with that job for all of chapter 2 and chapter 3.

Miitopia is available now on Switch.
