Those active on social media may have noticed a fairly strange trend today. Mewtwo, one of the most iconic Pokemon out there, is currently trending on Twitter. While it can be difficult to keep track of every internet trend as it comes and goes, Mewtwo sticks out as a particularly strange Pokemon to dominate the internet for a day. However, the pocket monster is trending for a pretty wholesome reason.

Today, February 6th, is Mewtwo's birthday according to Pokemon lore found in Pokemon Red and Green. This has lead to fans all over sending birthday well-wishes to the Pokemon, despite its somewhat devilish nature. Mewtwo debuted in the first Pokemon games, making it a mainstay in the franchise. For the past few decades, Pokemon trainers have trained formidable teams just to add get the creature to the Pokedex. 100-hour attempts to catch a Shiny Mewtwo have happened, sometimes ending in heartbreak when it teleports away.

Mewtwo's most iconic appearance is undoubtedly Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back, the Pokemon franchise's first feature-length film, where it appeared as the primary antagonist. A CGI-remake of Mewtwo Strikes Back is headed to Netflix later this month, giving fans a chance to see a new take on the film that so many have fond memories of. Since the first film, Mewtwo has managed to maintain its relevance in the Pokemon world, even being featured heavily in the Detective Pikachu movie.

There have been quite a few quotable and iconic Mewtwo moments since its debut, and it's hard to downplay the effect the character has had on the franchise as a whole. Mewtwo is a favorite legendary for many long-time Pokemon fans, and, in general, Pokemon wouldn't be the same without it. While the character may not be getting a cake, the well-wishes from Pokemon fans the world over are the next best thing.

It isn't often that a Pokemon has a specific, canonical birthday, but Mewtwo is a bit of a special case thanks to its background. It's a surprising thing to trend on Twitter, but that just shows how massive the Pokemon fan base has actually grown in the years since the franchise released. Maybe some of the mythical Pokemon will get the same treatment as Mewtwo soon.
