Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will offer players the option to switch to a "legacy style" control scheme, camera angle, and visual filter reminiscent of the original game. Initially revealed during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Snake Eater is a remake of 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3, which is widely regarded to be one of the best stealth games of all time.

The remake recently made the rounds in news cycles again, as developer Konami debuted a gameplay trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. The game's protagonist, Naked Snake, will once again be embarking on the mission of stopping the Soviets from activating a superweapon during the Cold War. Built in Unreal Engine 5, the gameplay appears quite faithful to the original, while adding a healthy dose of modernity to the mix.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Confirms Changes to Battle Damage System

Metal Gear Solid Delta has an upgraded battle damage system that could result in players getting a different experience in each playthrough.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will feature cutting-edge visuals with a cleaner art style and a new over-the-shoulder camera, but Konami has also considered the needs of fans who may desire a more accurate rendition of the original. Speaking on the Xbox Podcast after the gameplay trailer's debut, Metal Gear Solid series producer Noriaki Okamura confirmed that the remake will have a "Legacy Style" setting that will change the camera to a pulled-back overhead angle that hearkens back to the original, with the standard over-the-shoulder camera dubbed as "New Style."

Metal Gear Solid Delta Legacy Style Changes the Control Scheme and Visual Presentation

Okamura elaborated further on the Legacy Style option, revealing that it also changes the remake's control scheme to be more in line with the 2004 title, while also applying a visual filter that will "more faithfully recreate" the graphical presentation of Metal Gear Solid 3. The producer states that the visual filter in particular will give the remake a more "aged look," possibly referring to the green-yellowish tint that numerous games of the PS2 era are remembered for. Metal Gear Solid 3 sported the same color palette, which means the yellow filter will live on with the upcoming remake.

Konami has yet to provide a release date for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, but has unveiled the collector's edition and commenced preorders for the remake. A recent GameStop tweet quoted a release date of November 17, 2024, which happens to be the exact launch date of the original game. However, it was later rescinded, lending credence to the speculation of a 2025 release. Regardless of when it launches, the developers have clearly poured a lot of thought into the remake, especially going the extra mile with the Legacy Style setting, which should appease fans who crave an experience closest to the original.
