Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is consistently hailed as one of the series' best entries, and one of the best games that came from the PS2 era. Recent rumors indicate that an Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is in development at Konami, marking the return of this legendary game.
The original MGS3 was released in 2004, and dramatically switched up the signature stealth gameplay the Metal Gear franchise had been known for until that point. MGS3 moves players out of the highly fortified, futuristic military camps of the previous games, and into the jungles of the USSR during the Cold War; players were no longer dodging camera sight lines or disarming infra-red laser barriers, they were manually changing Naked Snake's clothing to increase his "camouflage index," and hunting animals to restore his health and stamina. Many versions of Metal Gear Solid 3 have been released over the years, but after the release of Metal Gear Survive, it looked like Konami wasn't going to make another title.
VGC published a report suggesting Konami is currently developing a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. This information comes from "publishing sources who spoke to VGC anonymously," writer, Andy Robinson, describes, as "they did not have permission to discuss their projects publicly." The MGS3 remake project is one of many relating to previous established IPs, as "Konami is now focused on bringing back its biggest brands to the premium games space," Robinson writes. In recent years, Konami has prioritized its pachinko machines by theming them after its greatest franchises, with a Metal Gear Solid 3-themed pachinko machine going viral a few years back.
Speculation in recent months had been that the now-PlayStation Studios company Bluepoint had been the company developing a Metal Gear Solid remake. As the developer of remakes for Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, Bluepoint was an obvious contender for the responsibility of ressurecting a classic Metal Gear Solid game. According to the VGC article though, the series is "being worked on by an external studio based in Singapore," and not Bluepoint. Robinson adds that Konami is planning on bringing remasters of the original Metal Gear Solid games to modern consoles in addition to the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3.
For fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, this is amazing news, following the ill-treatment the series has received over the past couple of years of. Metal Gear Solid's influence on the video game industry cannot be understated, as its gameplay and narrative-focus influence can still be found in games releasing today. It seemed like Metal Gear Solid 6 was never going to happen, but depending on how these projects go, it may just be possible. Though these are all just rumors still, it's impossible to not be at least a little excited about the potential of these games having new life today.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is available on the Nintendo 3DS, PS2, PS3, PS Vita, and Xbox 360. It is also playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility.
