In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden will face off with the members of Dead Cell. A former Special Forces unit that specialized in counter-terrorism, Dead Cell are now a rogue unit that have taken over the Big Shell Facility. Each of them poses a unique threat to Raiden as he attempts to rescue the president and uncover the mysteries of Big Shell. On the Helipad atop Strut E, Raiden faces off with Dead Cell's Demolitions Expert: Fatman.

Fatman's boss fight in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty requires players to balance combat with bomb defusal as they attempt to prevent a catastrophic explosion while taking down the one setting all the bombs. Fatman is further aided by his incredibly durable blast suit, allowing him to withstand Raiden's gunshots, and his roller skates. These roller skates allow him to zip around the battlefield with tremendous speed, making Fatman an uncannily nimble opponent.

How to Beat Fatman

After meeting Fatman and listening to his motives, players will begin the fight. It's important to have Sensor A equipped so that players can spot Fatman's bombs as he plants them. Players should prioritize freezing his bombs to disable them since if any of them go off it is an instant loss. Whenever there aren't bombs around, players can utilize a few different strategies to damage Fatman.

Hitting him in the head is the only way to damage him, but his quick movement makes it difficult to actually land shots. To help with this, players can rapid-fire at him to knock him over and leave him vulnerable for a short time. Players could also try beating him at his own game by planting Claymores around the arena in locations he is likely to skate through, which will instantly knock him over if he runs into them. Grenades can also be useful for stunning him but require good aim and timing. Raiden's melee combo will also knock him over, but getting close enough to do this isn't really practical.

After hitting Fatman in the head he'll get back up and keep moving, alternating between planting bombs and attacking Raiden with rapid-fire barrages from his Glock 18 Machine Pistol. Whenever Fatman can see Raiden he'll prepare to fire his Machine Pistol, often rolling towards Raiden while doing so and circling around him. Luckily there is a short wind-up before he begins firing which should allow Raiden to get out of the way and take cover.

Generally, it's a good idea to keep cover between Raiden and Fatman until attacking him, so it's fortunate that this arena is full of cargo containers that can be used as cover. After defeating Fatman he has one final trick up his sleeve, a hidden bomb somewhere nearby. Pick up his body and drag him off the spot where he died to reveal the final bomb. Disable it to end this and don't forget to grab Stillman's Dog Tag, which Fatman drops when picked up and dropped.
