Whether it's the live-action Super Mario Brothers movie or more recent cinematic adaptations of other iconic gaming properties such as Tomb Raider, it's safe to say the general perception surrounding video game movies is that they tend to be bad. According to the Metal Gear Solid movie director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, though, this "video game curse" with movies has been broken by the forthcoming motion picture from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment, Detective Pikachu.

Vogt-Roberts has said Detective Pikachu is "super effective" and that he has "seen it twice", proclaiming viewers will be "mesmerized" any time a classic Pokemon character appears on-screen due to there being "a charisma reminiscent of watching Tony Stark tinker with robots in Iron Man". What's more is that the Metal Gear Solid movie director declares that the Pokemon franchise's Water-type Psyduck "steals the movie".

Vogt-Roberts is an avid video game fan, so some may view his ringing endorsement of Detective Pikachu as a good sign that the Pokemon-themed movie will actually deliver a solid final product. That said, though, one could also argue that the Metal Gear Solid movie director is simply singing Detective Pikachu's praises in an attempt to destigmatize the perception of most video game movies being bad in order to have fans be more open to viewing his film based on Hideo Kojima's stealth-action franchise in a favorable light.

One may not need to be so cynical about the matter, however. The Detective Pikachu movie has been in the pipeline since 2016, so there has definitely been plenty of time to have ensured it will be palatable to both hardcore video game fans and to standard film-goers alike. The latest Detective Pikachu trailer, for instance, showcases the high frequency of Pokemon that will be making appearances, and it certainly seems as if the filmmakers have paid close attention to details regarding their attributes so as to make them likable for newcomers and enjoyable to longtime fans as well.

All things considered, the general public will simply have to wait and find out if Detective Pikachu does in fact break the "video game curse" when it comes to movie adaptations. Thankfully, we won't have to wait too much longer to see if that's the case, as the film's set to hit the big screen early next month.

Detective Pikachu officially releases in theaters on May 10, 2019.
