Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new VR subscription service for the Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3 (when available) that allows subscribers to claim two games every month at a discounted price. The company has already confirmed the four games that can be claimed in July and August. Perhaps the best point of comparison would be Sony's PS Plus service, as it fundamentally operates similarly to the Essential Tier.

PS Plus subscribers get access to online play in addition to three games every month, as long as they have access to the Essential Tier. Notably, Meta Quest+ only gives subscribers access to two games; it doesn't seem there are any other incentivizing features, at least for its launch capabilities. It remains to be seen how the subscription service grows, but for $7.99 per month or $59.99 annually, subscribers will get these two titles every month. They can play them as long as their subscription is active; what's more, those who sign up now through July 31 will get the first month for $1.

For July 2023, Meta Quest+ subscribers will get access to Pistol Whip and Pixel Ripped 1995. Pixel Whip is an action-rhythm FPS where music and gunplay combine, so players can compete on leaderboards, build rhythms with bullets, and fight through various fever dream scenes. Meanwhile, Pixel Ripped 1995 is described as a VR game within a game, where players must complete gameplay challenges and throwbacks to classics from the 16 and 32-bit eras.

Meta Quest+ Game List

  • Pistol Whip (July 2023)
  • Pixel Ripped 1995 (July 2023)
  • Walkabout Mini Golf (August 2023)
  • MOTHERGUNSHIP: FORGE (August 2023)

For August 2023, Meta Quest+ subscribers will get access to Walkabout Mini Golf and MOTHERGUNSHIP: FORGE. The first game has it all in the title, as it is a VR mini-golf game, but the calm of it is met with the chaos of MOTHERGUNSHIP: FORGE. The latter game is a VR FPS roguelike title, where players must forge powerful guns like a rocket-firing shotgun to battle their way to freedom, on repeat.

Overall, it's clear how much value this brings to the Meta Quest headsets, as VR newcomers can get new recommendations every month for a low subscription cost. It remains to be seen how it is received and how Meta supports it beyond this core concept, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Meta Quest+ become the PS Plus of the VR industry.
