Meta has unveiled the v55 update coming to the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro virtual reality headsets, and both devices will be seeing a major performance boost as a result. The changes will give both the Meta Quest systems a boost in how their CPU and GPU perform.

While some virtual reality enthusiasts are already eyeing the Meta Quest 3 and the Apple Vision Pro, the Meta Quest 2 is still a supported system, unlike its predecessor, the original Oculus/Meta Quest. The Meta Quest Pro is a much more expensive system than the standard Quests, but it comes with additional benefits like eye tracking and mixed reality. With the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro now discounted following the reveal of the upcoming Meta Quest 3, this new update gives gamers intrigued by virtual reality a chance to try out the devices at their best.

The Meta Quest v55 update is beginning to roll out, and it promises up to a 26% improvement in CPU performance on both the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro headsets. GPU gets a boost across both as well, with the Quest 2 seeing a 19% increase in speed and the Quest Pro a 11% boost. Meta notes that users should expect to see an improvement not only in the performance of games, but how the UI functions, as well. Dynamic Resolution Scaling is also coming to both headsets, which should help to prevent frame dropping by altering the resolution depending on how much of a processing load the GPU has.

In addition to these changes, the Meta Quest headsets are seeing some various improvements. A new passcode security option has been added, allowing users to choose a numerical code to access the headset. Web browsing on the headset now supports multi-touch controls on controllers and hand tracking alike. The Quest Pro should have more accurate eye tracking now, and various features have been added to make social interaction easier and more expressive.

Fans of the headsets, as well as VR developers, will likely be pleased with this announcement, and it may give a hint as to what to expect from the Meta Quest 3, as it's planned to be considerably more powerful than the Meta Quest 2. Some may be satisfied with the new limitations of the current hardware, though some may be perturbed if they discover they haven't received the v55 update yet. Users shouldn't worry, though, as Meta rolls out updates gradually, so some users get them before others do.
