The three final bosses of Bloodborne all have a lot to prove, considering that any one of them can be the last impression that the game gets to make on a player. That being said, even the weakest in the bunch manages to make for a memorable end to the adventure that can compare to both Gehrman and the Moon Presence.

This potential final encounter would be Mergo's Wet Nurse, who appears at the end of the last mandatory dungeon, and acts as the finale for the Yharnam Sunrise ending. The positive vibe of this ending has many people consider it to be the "good ending" for Bloodborne, making the Wet Nurse the key to getting the happiest fate for the Hunter.

Mergo's Wet Nurse Topping the Nightmare of Mensis

Bloodborne Nightmare of Mensis

By the end of Bloodborne, players will be tasked with traversing through the Nightmare of Mensis, one of the darkest and most surreal areas within the entire game. Not only is this location the most popular area for Bloodborne's PVP, but it is also the culmination of the nightmarish, cosmic horror that had been building up the whole time. So, this level needed a boss that fits the strange atmosphere. In this way, Mergo's Wet Nurse manages to make good on everything that the game had been working towards in terms of lore and cosmic scope.

During popular PVP events like Return to Yharnam, the online landscape of this area is made all the more terrifying by filling the areas with other players invading around every corner. This can all help make the prospect of finally reaching the end of the Nightmare of Mensis a breath of fresh air. Of course, this brief pause is immediately overtaken by the presence of Mergo's Wet Nurse, who will likely thrash a new player trudging through the area for the first time.

Mergo's Wet Nurse is Tough Enough to Cap of Bloodborne

Bloodborne Mergo's Wet Nurse

The final boss of FromSoftware titles has always been a mixed bag, with Gwyn being a powerful foe who can be easily parried to death, Nashandra being a squishy disappointment, and Soul of Cinder being more homage than an original design. So, by the time Bloodborne released, there was a lot of pressure to make sure that the final encounter would be brutally difficult and a compelling culmination of the combat that came before. Mergo's Wet Nurse manages to hit these marks perfectly, being an impressively powerful enemy that can't easily be beaten with only one combat mechanic.

Thanks to the speed and reach of the boss, Mergo's Wet Nurse is a looming specter of death that can lunge a series of swords a great distance forward to deal massive damage. Any of these attacks, from the jumping dive to the charged upswing, are all telegraphed in a way that can easily be dodged once a player is familiar with them. However, on an initial run, or to a rusty player returning to Bloodborne's creepiest locations after a long break, these attacks can easily catch a hunter off guard and shred their health quickly.

All of this makes for an impressive boss that could easily pass as the true finale to a game as impressive as Bloodborne. While the optional final encounters that come after Mergo's Wet Nurse act as a much better cap for the game, this fight is still compelling and impressive enough to lead into the end credits. This means that no matter if players end their playthrough against the nightmarish Mergo's Wet Nurse, the epic First Hunter Gehrman, or the string-pulling Moon Presence, any option makes for a perfect end to one of FromSoftware's best games.
