Video games can't be complete without some sort of villainous character that is consistently berating the protagonist or somebody else in the game. Sometimes these characters aren't even the main villain of the title, but they continue to throw insults or taunt the player at any given chance.

While some characters are praised for how they help the player in some way, these video game characters are just plain mean and continue to be awful to the player throughout their respective games. Out of all those available characters these few are by far the meanest out of all of them and many players think they should just give some characters a break.

8 Handsome Jack (Borderlands)

Handsome Jack in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Handsome Jack may be an incredibly mean character, but he's still one of the most loved villains in the Borderlands franchise, he is incredibly witty with many moments that have left players questioning his sanity or laughing along with him.

Borderlands has many interesting side quests but Borderlands 2 is by far the best game that allowed players to get to know Handsome Jack as he found a way to constantly pester the Vault Hunter; this is also the game where he infamously tasked the player with the side quest of killing themselves though of course this doesn't work.

7 Bowser (Mario)

Of course, at least one Nintendo baddie would need to be mentioned as one of the meanest characters in gaming, and it's of no surprise to see that spot be taken by Bowser. This large Koopa from the Mario Franchise has been seen in many games kidnapping Peach and attempting to take over the mushroom kingdom.

Some mean points do need to be deducted as there has been the occasional game where Bowser has helped Mario in one way or another or even joined for some golf, tennis, or karting, but most of the time Bowser has remained mean and lethal.

6 Pagan Min (Far Cry 4)

Far Cry is another franchise that has gifted players with plenty of mean characters that have either been possible allies or the main villain of the game. Out of all those available Pagan Min from Far Cry 4 must be one of the meanest of them all.

While he does invite Ajay to feast on Crab Rangoon with him at the start of the game; gamers can't forget how Pagan Min murdered one of his guards for shooting at the bus that they were first found upon. Throughout the adventure of Far Cry 4 players uncover the other foul deeds Pagan has done which has put Kyrat in its current situation.

5 Mr. Jefferson (Life Is Strange)

Mr. Jefferson may appear as the friendly photography teacher that helps guide Max on her academic adventure into the world of pictures; however, by the end of the game, it is revealed that Mr. Jefferson was not a very nice man.

Throughout Life is Strange it is up to the player to help many of the characters avoid their possible deaths or shortcomings, and it turns out that Mr. Jefferson is both indirectly and directly involved in many of these deaths. He appears incredibly cold and sadistic as the photographer Max once idolized is lost as she uncovers the horrid man that he is.

4 The Joker (Batman: Arkham)

The Joker in Batman: Arkham Knight

Arguably, the Joker is far more of a comic book villain than a video game one, however, players are sure to have encountered him multiple times during the Batman: Arkham franchise that ended with Batman: Arkham Knight. Naturally, the Joker is a sadistic villain that is always tormenting Batman, and this continues to be the case during the games.

Players are likely to truly be a target of his mean streak during Batman: Arkham Asylum where Batman finds himself trapped inside the infamous Asylum that is being controlled by the Joker. He makes sure to consistently check in with his nemesis as he sends all sorts of villains his way.

3 Micah Bell (Red Dead Redemption 2)

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great game with an amazing story. Joining the Van der Linde gang of outlaws, the small group of individuals still feel like family to the player as the group appears to support one another. However, one member of this dysfunctional family in Red Dead Redemption 2 is unlike the others, Micah; even near the start of the title Arthur shows a disliking to Micah which should warn players to be cautious of this foul-mouthed and disgusting outlaw.

Finally, by the end of the game, the weaseling of Micah has reached its end as the ruthless cowboy has finally managed to make the Van der Linde gang split up. Many of the members leave as Micah's friends take over the crucial roles for the final heist.

2 Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)

Another long-standing franchise that has had its fair share of mean characters is Resident Evil, but by far one of the meanest of the bunch must be Albert Wesker. He was one of the original test subjects for Project W, Albert Wesker carries all the strength of the virus while also having the intelligence to understand what he's done to himself due to his scientific background.

Albert Wesker is also incredibly cocky and cold as he eventually betrays the original company of Umbrella to steal their research data while also becoming more powerful. He has encountered many of the protagonists across the Resident Evil games with his most hated being Chris Redfield.

1 GLaDOS (Portal)

GLaDOS in Portal

Unsurprisingly, the meanest character in gaming must go to the horrible yet much-loved robot known as GLaDOS. She has multiple tests lined-up for the player in both Portal and Portal 2 where she puts the player to their puzzle limit in the hope of making it through each level.

Her voice can always be heard as the player attempts to overcome each test, whereas GLaDOS continues to act incredibly sarcastic toward the player's achievements. One thing that players should always remember when encountering this mean robot is that the cake is a lie – but some will still fall for it.
