The Max Payne series has been a fundamental part of many gamers' lives for over two decades, carving a memorable niche in the neo-noir genre that will hopefully be refined in the upcoming Max Payne Remakes. After the first Max Payne was released in 2001, the police detective-turned-vigilante found himself in increasingly dangerous and dramatic situations as he took on mobsters and drug dealers from New York City to Sao Paulo. After Rockstar Games' Max Payne 3 was released in 2012, the franchise went quiet until Remedy Entertainment recently announced that the Max Payne Remakes of the first two games were in the works.

The third-person shooter series isn't the first to revisit its earlier titles and give them the reboot treatment, and it definitely won't be the last. Remasters and remakes have been becoming the norm as technology and consoles continue to improve and studios look at ways they can resurrect or refine previous releases, but this can come with some drawbacks. While many fans might be dying to get back to the gritty, crime-ridden world of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, the upcoming Max Payne Remakes have some stiff competition thanks to more recent reboots like Motive Studios' 2023 survival horror game Dead Space, which Remedy would do well to emulate.

Motive Studios' Dead Space Remake

Fans of a franchise usually take the news of a reboot of a beloved game with a pinch of salt. Sometimes remakes can be truly elevated versions of the original title, but occasionally they can just be transparent attempts at a cash grab and barely improve upon the game they're meant to remake. Infamous recent examples include Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition, which failed to impress players or live up to the hype of the games it was based on. Thankfully, other remakes get off to a much better start and are seen as fitting extensions of a popular game's legacy, like 2023's Dead Space.

The first release in the series for ten years, the recent remake of Dead Space was a welcome return to the mutant-filled claustrophobic corridors of the USG Ishimura. Even from the earliest glimpses of Dead Space's development, it was clear that Motive Studio was committed to including an incredible amount of detail and bringing the original game up to a level where it could compete with even the most impressive current-gen titles. All the changes made to Dead Space felt considered and necessary, and they all brought something exciting to the new game that elevated it from its 2008 state. Instead of muddying Dead Space's legacy, the 2023 title rejuvenated it, and this is something the Max Payne Remakes need to pay close attention to.

Why Max Payne Needs To Step Up Its Game

Max Payne Bullet Time

It's natural for fans to be a little trepidatious when it comes to remakes of their favorite games. There's no telling how extensive the changes that the developer makes will be, or how much of the charm of the original titles will be scrubbed away with new graphics and gameplay mechanics. The Max Payne Remakes have a chance to address issues from the first games and polish the overall experience so that they're slicker, savvier, and more fun, but they can't forget what made the initial entries good in the first place. The Dead Space remake did a phenomenal job of retaining everything that worked in the original game while adding newer, complimentary elements like voice acting for protagonist Isaac Clarke.

The Max Payne Remakes need to improve every aspect of the games, from the environments to the characterizations and gunplay. Dead Space and its treatment of the source material showed how not every change needs to be seismic or groundbreaking, but it needs to be considered and still honor the title that it's remaking. The Max Payne Remakes shouldn't be soulless attempts to milk a franchise for extra money or a joyless attempt to reskin the original games just so they can play competently on newer consoles. Remedy needs to lovingly restore the first two titles to the same level as Motive's work on Dead Space, or else risk being lost in the noise of other subpar reboots.
