Fans of the Mass Effect series by BioWare have a lot to look forward to in the coming year. On N7 Day 2020, November 7, the developer of the popular sci-fi RPG franchise announced that not only would the original trilogy be remastered as the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, but an entirely new entry in the series was also currently in development.

The first teaser trailer of the next Mass Effect was unveiled at The Game Awards 2020 on December 10 and, since then, a bit more news about the upcoming game has come to light, bringing hope to gamers who have justifiable concerns that Mass Effect 5 might miss the mark like 2017’s Mass Effect Andromeda.

The new game’s project director, Michael Gamble, recently revealed that key team members who worked on the original trilogy will be returning to lend their expertise for the development of Mass Effect 5. Dusty Everman played an important part in bringing the original Normandy to life. Everman left BioWare five years ago to found his own studio, but returned to his former employer in October to fill the role of Principal Narrative Designer and work on the new Mass Effect game.

Also joining the Mass Effect 5 team is Parrish Ley, a BioWare veteran who is currently creative director but served as the cinematic director for the original trilogy. In his 20 years with the company, Brenon Holmes has worked on three Mass Effect titles, helping to develop the gameplay systems so integral to a solid RPG experience. Now a producer, he will be leaving his work with the Anthem team to focus on Mass Effect 5.

Lastly, Derek Watts, the series’ original art director, will also be joining the team for the new Mass Effect game. Watts has been with BioWare since the days of Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and has most recently been working on Anthem.

Whether Mass Effect 5 will make its appearance in 2021 is uncertain. Before his recent departure from BioWare, then General Manager Casey Hudson shared that development of the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe was still in its early stages. But even if the next game in the series doesn’t come out in 2021, fans can be sure that there will be a steady flood of real news, teasers, and rumors to keep them occupied up until launch.

Mass Effect 5 is currently in development.
