Fans of the Mass Effect franchise believe that there is "no reason" that Grunt shouldn't return as part of Mass Effect 4. Some feel that the Krogan present a huge narrative hurdle in Mass Effect 4, but not everybody agrees with this take.
Grunt first appeared in Mass Effect 2, and instantly became a fan favorite. As the resident Krogan on the team, he had a lot to live up to after Urdnot Wrex in the initial game. Rather than replacing Wrex like for like, Bioware took a different approach, instead making Grunt a tank-born Krogran. This brought with it a strong debate about what it means to be Krogan, providing a great story hook for one of Mass Effect's greatest companions. Grunt would return in a reduced role in Mass Effect 3, but remained popular with the community.
The post online highlighted the many reasons that Grunt should return in Mass Effect 4. The main reason is that the Krogan in Mass Effect live up to a thousand years old. As a tank-born, Grunt is just a year old, and it's very feasible he lives until the events of the newer game. The user also points out that according to Bioware stats, Grunt barely ever dies in Mass Effect 2's suicide mission, and is equally difficult to kill in Mass Effect 3. As well as this, the Redditor explains that Grunt's motivation is to fight, so if a new protagonist can show up and give him a reason to, he'll be there.
Others in the thread massively agreed with the idea, with many feeling his return is almost necessary as a bridge to Krogan peace in the Mass Effect galaxy post-Shepard. Grunt certainly has an interesting role to play in the earlier Mass Effect games, but at times his role was almost superseded by other more important Krogan, like Wrex and Eve. Bringing him back once again would provide a great way for him to play an important role in the franchise's story.
With development on Mass Effect 4 now well underway, hopefully it isn't long before gamers get to hear more official news about what the title will entail. With story questions post-Mass Effect 3 up in the air, it certainly has a lot of heavy lifting to do. If Bioware chooses a canon ending to the original trilogy, it risks isolating a lot of fans, and it's certainly not an envious task. The studio has remained tight-lipped about the sequel so far, withonly a few teasers giving any hint about the content of the game. That hasn't stopped fan speculation from going wild online, with some Mass Effect fans sharing their one big request for Mass Effect 4's romances.
