After recovering the graybox in Mass Effect 2's Stealing Memory loyalty mission, players are presented with a tough choice. More specifically, fans must decide if Kasumi should keep or destroy the graybox, and while this choice does not affect gameplay in any major way, there are some consequences to be aware of. Players will find details on those consequences in this guide, and it should help fans move forward with the Kasumi loyalty mission choice in Mass Effect 2.

To start, it important to mention that Kasumi Goto will become loyal regardless of how a player opts to resolve this decision. As such, fans only really need to consider what they want for the master thief's future when making this choice, and they will hear more about how her life was impacted during a side mission in Mass Effect 3. More information on specifically how this manifests can be found below, though it is worth noting that there are some Mass Effect 2 and 3 spoilers there as well.

With that established, Kasumi reappears in Mass Effect 3's Hanar Diplomat side mission, and, if she kept the graybox, it is revealed that she has spent much of her time plugged into the device. This will, of course, not be the case if the graybox was destroyed, and she will instead speak more generally about the mission at hand. Mass Effect players that wish to free Kasumi from the memory of Keiji Okuda are thus advised to destroy the graybox, though the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference.

To note, not completing Kasumi's loyalty mission comes with much greater gameplay consequences than the decision to keep or destroy the graybox. Again, these consequences are seen during the Hanar Diplomat side mission, and the most significant of them is that Kasumi will not show herself at the end of the quest if Stealing Memory was not finished. This will prevent players from being able to recruit her as a War Asset, though that should not preclude them from receiving the best ending in Mass Effect 3.

One final thing to say is that all of this presumes that Kasumi survived Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission, as she will obviously not appear in Hanar Diplomat if she did not. Under those circumstances, players will face a new choice during the Mass Effect 3 side mission that revolves around saving Jondum Bau or stopping the upload, and that will ultimately determine which War Asset they receive.
