Spider-Man 2099 is trending in the Marvel fandom once again, as passionate players of Marvel's Spider-Man want Insomniac Games to develop a spinoff featuring Miguel O'Hara, the Irish-Mexican geneticist who takes on the mantle of Spider-Man in a megacorp-infested cyberpunk setting. Insomniac is no stranger to spinoff games, as the first game paved the way for both its Spider-Man: Miles Morales spinoff and Marvel's Wolverine, a more standalone entry set within the same continuity.

Miguel O'Hara's sudden popularity is a result of his cameo in the first Spider-Verse movie, and Oscar Isaacs is set to reprise his role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse film. The Spider-Man 2099 line of comics began in 1992 and introduced a radically different reimagining of both New York City and its web-slinging protector. Though Miguel might not have the draw of Peter Parker or even Miles Morales yet, fans hope that the Spider-Verse sequel will thrust Spider-Man 2099 into the mainstream enough that Insomniac might consider making a spinoff.

The idea was broached by EamoM2oo4 on the official subreddit for Marvel's Spider-Man, where other fans came out in support and agreement that a Miguel O'Hara game set in a cyberpunk New York City would have a lot of appeal, especially with the current popularity of Cyberpunk 2077 and its anime spinoff Edgerunners. Moreover, Spider-Man 2099 boasts a different set of abilities for Spider-Man compared to the classic version, such as night-vision, enhanced hearing, light sensitivity, venom glands, and Miguel's iconic talons.

Some players were quick to point out the similarity between EamoM2oo4's idea and the Spider-Man: Edge of Time game developed by Beenox that was released in 2011. It heavily featured elements from Spider-Man 2099 in its narrative, as Miguel O'Hara attempted to stop an Alchemax scientist from rewriting history, meeting his predecessor along the way. While skeptical fans expressed that it was like hoping for Rocksteady to make a Batman Beyond game, the effect of the impending Across the Spider-Verse movie should not be underestimated.

Regardless of the direction that Insomniac takes the franchise, fans should expect to play Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in the fall of 2023 on the PlayStation 5. It will feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as the game's protagonists, while the main antagonists are slated to be Venom and Kraven the Hunter. Taking this into consideration, a potential Spider-Man 2099 game would be several years away, but depending on the impression Miguel O'Hara leaves on the general audience, he may well get his own spinoff somewhere down the line.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is available for PC and PS5.
