Highlights

  • Spider-Man 3 may feature Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus as main villains, potentially introducing Madame Web as a powerful guide for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
  • A faithful Madame Web interpretation could explore her unique origin story, including her life support machine and connection to Oscorp.
  • Spider-Man 3 has the potential to include various characters from the comics, such as Knull and Silk, and may adapt the Gathering of the Five ritual storyline.

Marvel's Spider-Man has been setting the stage for Norman Osborn to take on the role of the next big villain, and it seems like the third mainline game will finally give the Green Goblin his time in the spotlight. The ending of Spider-Man 2 teased Norman's descent into crime as the Green Goblin after Harry was left in a coma, but this could also be a great opportunity to give another character their due: Madame Web.

At the moment, Madame Web has become a meme, due to the failed live-action adaptation of the character. Not only was the movie confusing, the film changed so much of Madame Web's story in such bizarre ways that it didn't really feel like the character at all. However, a third entry in Insomniac's growing Spider-Man universe could give Madame Web the interpretation she deserves.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 doubled down on its shared universe and the third main installment will have big shoes to fill if it wants to follow it up.

Spider-Man 3's Villains Could Present the Perfect Opportunity to Introduce Madame Web

The ending of Spider-Man 2 hinted at a potential team-up between Norman Osborn and a currently imprisoned Otto Octavius. If the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus were to be the main villains in Spider-Man 3, Madame Web could make herself known, bringing Peter and Miles an extra helping hand.

A More Faithful Madame Web Interpretation

Madame Web has a fascinating history with Spider-Man. Born blind and suffering from a neurological condition, the character developed clairvoyant powers, which she eventually used to aid Spider-Man. Due to her neurological condition, she is historically known to survive via a life support machine that resembles a cybernetic web. Although the life support machine is built by her husband in the comics, Spider-Man 3 could put an interesting twist on this part of her origin story.

A cybernetic life support machine is easily something that could be part of Oscorp research. Oscorp is always researching cutting-edge technology, and having Cassandra Webb participate as a test subject for a groundbreaking Oscorp life support invention similar to her iconic machine from the comics could be the perfect way to tie her into the game's story. Spider-Man 3 could feature many compelling characters from the comics, like Knull and Silk, and Madame Web could serve as a powerful guide for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

One particularly fascinating story that has featured Madame Web is a plot point involving her and Norman Osborn partaking in a magic ritual together. Afraid of her impending death, Cassandra joins a ritual called the Gathering of the Five, which gives her immortality. With Norman's motive of finding a cure for Harry leading him down some ethically questionable roads, the Gathering of the Five ritual could potentially play a part in Spider-Man 3's story as well.

Spider-Man 3 is Filled With Potential

Despite the notorious leaks that hit Insomniac, there are still likely plenty of surprises in store for Spider-Man 3. As the franchise grows, Spider-Man 3 could take things to the next level with even more characters thrown into the mix. There have already been teases of Silk, and with Peter Parker seemingly distancing himself from the superhero role, it will be interesting to see if the aforementioned character takes his place. As time passes, more solid information about Spider-Man 3 will start to paint a clearer picture of the franchise's trajectory.

There haven't been any hints found in the Insomniac leaks pointing towards a possible Madame Web appearance, but that doesn't fully rule out the character. Madame Web is an intriguing figure in the lore of Spider-Man comics, and she deserves to be portrayed in a way that does the character justice, and Insomniac might be the perfect developer to do so.
