The developers of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 have opened up about how Tony Todd was cast in the role of Venom for the upcoming video game. During a recent panel, the people behind the game discussed how and why they cast the horror icon in the role. However, the road to hiring Tony Todd for Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was a rather logical one.
Early on in the game's promotion cycle, it was revealed that Tony Todd had been cast as Venom for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Venom was notably absent from the first game, though the symbiote could be seen in one of the game's after-credit endings. It was generally expected that the iconic antagonist would play a role in the upcoming game. The game's first trailer confirmed this, revealed the involvement of Kraven the Hunter, and also revealed the character's voice actor.
During the game's panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the voice actor and developer revealed how the horror icon was cast in the role. Arguments have been made that Tony Todd is the perfect voice for Venom, and the people behind the game seem to agree. According to Bryan Intihar, Marvel's Spider-Man 2's creative director, the new Candyman film was a big inspiration for the casting. "I just happened to be on the internet one day listening to the new Candyman trailer, and I heard Tony, and I was like, 'If I could get like a Tony Todd. That would be the one.'" Later on, the game's Dialog Lead revealed that Tony Todd was interested, resulting in a quick audition before the actor was cast in the role.
Before taking on the role of Venom, the actor was already a horror icon. Tony Todd is perhaps best known for his role as the forever underappreciated Candyman in the film of the same name. The actor would go on to reprise the role for the film's two direct sequels and the 2021 reboot/sequel titled Candyman. The actor has also done a fair share of voice-over work which includes credits in films, television shows, and video games, and has voiced several video game characters in the past. Now the actor will be adding Venom to his already impressive resume.
Recently, Insomniac revealed more about Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but there are still a lot of unknowns. It's not entirely clear who will be the host for the alien creature, but it is apparent that Peter Parker will be its host at some point beforehand. Regardless of who the host will be, it's clear that the developer had a clear idea of who they wanted as Venom and ultimately got what they wanted.
