Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 still doesn’t have a release date nailed down, but its sole gameplay trailer has revealed more than enough for fans to mull over until more information is inevitably shared. More than 10 minutes of gameplay was revealed during the PlayStation Showcase with a surprising amount of content on display, including a full reveal of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Lizard, Kraven, new traversal and gadget capabilities, and the iconic black symbiote suit. The latter was perhaps its most alarming reveal, and demonstrates how much significance Peter Parker’s new threads will have in Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ narrative.

Because the symbiote is known to play a huge role in the story, seeing gameplay with Peter as its host was truly an unpredictable reveal for the showcase. Here, fans saw a ton of its unique tendril-based abilities that give it incredible range and damage compared to what Peter is able to accomplish with his default red, blue, and white costume. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will almost assuredly have a catalog of cosmetic suits like its predecessors did, but if the symbiote suit is available for most or all of the game, then Insomniac will have needed to come up with a way to encourage fans to not choose it as their only suit based on its obvious precedence.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit Might Be Too OP

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s symbiote suit not only looks distinct as a look that was withheld from the original game on purpose, but it also grants Peter exciting new combat mechanics. Players are able to strike enemies from a great distance, launch them into the air, and grab multiple enemies at once with several tendrils hoisting them in the air before slamming them down. This seems to be the primary suit that players will have access to when playing as Peter due to the abilities slotted into the left-hand UI wheel, but it is likely that Peter will also be able to battle crime in his ordinary costume as well.

The symbiote may be the most unique change made to Peter’s arsenal, and that is sorely needed since his Spider-Man counterpart Miles Morales arguably has a much more engaging catalog of genetically altered abilities. It has been a long wait for the symbiote suit to make its appearance in the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, especially considering the fact that the symbiote was explicitly teased at the end of the original game, and it might be as difficult to strip fans away from it as it will be for Peter to be rid of its separation anxiety as a result.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Needs an Incentive for Peter to Switch Suits

It would seem redundant, then, to have a ton of alternate suits available for Peter if the symbiote is meant to take the cake and be the only suit players will want to wear. In this instance, it would make the most sense for Peter’s other alternate suits to have respective mods or abilities that fans may want for their playstyle, but not being able to simply swap out mods for another suit would be a backstep with regard to Marvel’s Spider-Man.

The only conceivable way that Insomniac could let fans have their cake and eat it too is to include a symbiote iteration for each alternate suit Peter can equip. This means that even if Peter is wearing a potential Superior Spider-Man skin in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it would have its own unique look when players don the symbiote atop it.

If the symbiote is equippable regardless of which costume Peter is wearing, that would give the player a reasonable means to swap to another suit if they wanted to. Otherwise, Peter’s customization may be far less considered in the sequel than Miles’ at the cost of having an overpowered alien suit that will likely evolve and become more perilous as fans progress through Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches this fall, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
