Highlights

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 brings back fan-favorite costume designs, giving players a few options to customize them to their liking.
  • Suit styles provide fans with a few color and design options for their suits, with some special variants like the Superior Spider-Man green and white suit and the classic Symbiote suit from the '90s animated series.
  • Fans have long desired full suit customization, which could include customizing individual pieces like symbols, lenses, colors, materials, and webbing, with players unlocking new options as they progress. Hopefully, styles are a stepping stone toward this full customization.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, like its predecessors, fully embraces the many costumes worn by its two wall-crawlers. Original designs for Miles Morales that fans fell in love with, like the 2020 suit and the Bodega Cat suit, make a return. For Peter, a few great comic book designs are present, but so too are nearly a dozen movie suits. While the suits from the films do not make use of the mechanic, the original designs and comic book looks allow Spidey fans to engage with suit styles.

Suit styles are essentially color swaps for the game’s various suits, allowing players to rock a bold yellow recolor of the Advanced Suit as well as a striking black and red version. Some suit styles are a bit more special, like the green and white variant of the Superior Spider-Man suit boasting a distinct spider symbol and a different vibe in general, or subtle red and blue shading making the classic Symbiote suit look as if it was ripped from the 90s animated series. Unsurprisingly, fans responded well to the suit styles, only wishing that the movie suits also had them so that there would be even more colors to pick from. Still, as great as suit styles are, they should just be a stepping stone to the full costume customization that fans have always wanted.

Customizable Suit Features That Would Make Sense For Marvel’s Spider-Man 3

While it would take a lot of work on Insomniac Games’ part to deliver full suit customization, as it would mean designing some brand-new systems, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 possibly being the “Final Chapter” means that it could be the developer’s last chance to do so. For years, fans have imagined a game where they could design their own Spider-Man costume, a dream that only became more apparent when Insomniac started showcasing how varied the hero’s costume lineup really was. By featuring so many great suits over the years, and then offering variants of them through suit styles, it is only natural that fans have imagined the logical next step.

If proper suit creation came to the series, there are a number of options that could be given to the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 community. Some of the most definitive Spidey suit features immediately come to mind, as players could customize lenses and spider symbols. If they wanted a slanted symbol like Ben Reilly or pointy, angry-looking eye lenses like those on the Symbiote suit, those options could be chosen. Instead of a limited number of suit styles, players could customize the primary, secondary, and accent colors of their costume, unlocking new shades as they level up the heroes and finish activities in the next game.

Additionally, fans of the friendly neighborhood hero could be granted control over suit textures. If they want to give Spidey an armor look or a spandex-looking suit, they could do so, crafting their ideal costume using a handful of materials provided by Insomniac. Additionally, players could choose between the common flat webbing and the raised webbing of the beloved Raimi suit, with even web shooters able to be customized. In summary, the suggested suit customization mechanic could include the following features:

  • Choice over symbols, lenses, web shooters, etc.
  • Deep control over costume colors.
  • Options for suit materials and webbing.
  • Unlockable suit customization options as players level up and complete activities.

Video Game Fashion Proves Suit Customization in Spider-Man 3 Would Be a Hit

With Insomniac using all the parts of the suits it has crafted over the years to make sure there are plenty of customization options, it is hard to imagine this hypothetical feature being anything but a success. After all, it takes one look at the thriving fashion communities for anything from Destiny 2 and Warframe to Animal Crossing and The Sims to realize how much gamers love designing outfits for their characters. When coupled with the Marvel’s Spider-Man series’ dedicated photo mode community, fans would undoubtedly be sharing their suit designs for years after Marvel’s Spider-Man 3’s initial release.
