The trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has officially released, and it certainly does not disappoint. Players are shown several versions of the wall-crawler, from the fan favorites Spider-Gwen and Peter B. Parker to newcomers like Ben Reilly and the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2099. They are also given a few big plot points to get excited about, with the biggest being a potential clash between two Spider-Men - something that could also be in the cards for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

In the trailer, Miles Morales is shown having a big disagreement with Spider-Man 2099, with the latter arguing that one life is worth sacrificing for the greater good. Miles disagrees, with many believing that one of his parents will be the person he is desperate to save. This will seemingly lead to a fight between Miles and 2099, with each hero potentially having their own lineup of Spider-People alongside them. While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has more than enough to handle between its two Spideys and will surely not feature a large battle between dozens of Spiders, the two leads may end up fighting each other just like 2099 and Miles.

Why Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Two Heroes Could Clash

Miles Morales and Peter Parker

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles and Miguel O’Hara are clashing over their opposing ideologies, with Miles embodying Spidey’s traditional values of not leaving anyone behind. Clearly, Miguel prioritizes the greater good, and the dynamic could prove very similar to what is seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home with Peter Parker and Doctor Strange. At the end of the film, the two could easily reconcile and fight another threat together, as both are ultimately heroes.

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, though, things could get a bit messier. This is because the Symbiote is at play, and many fans are expecting the alien goo to go beyond Venom and find a new host. Like the comics, it could end up attaching itself to Peter, as Miles does not feel like the right fit based on the narrative thus far. If it does attach itself to Peter, then it would only be a matter of time before the two heroes clash.

The story could see Peter slowly going further and further once the Symbote attaches itself to him, eventually taking a step too far and requiring Miles to take him down. Whether it is a recreation of Kraven’s Last Hunt or Peter just pulling his punches and killing criminals, control could shift fully to Miles in the back half of the game, with an emotional fight forcing him to take down his mentor and remove the Symbiote.

While this is obviously just a theory, it would be shocking if the Symbiote was not used beyond Venom, as fans have been wanting to equip Spider-Man’s black costume for years. It would also be a fresh idea for a Spider-Man story, as Insomniac would be taking full advantage of having two active webslingers. While the tone could be very different, it would be interesting if 2023’s two biggest Spider-Man stories shared the same scenario of an older Spider-Man battling a younger one.

With Miles Morales finding himself at the center of a conflict with Spider-Man 2099 on the big screen, and potentially another one with Peter in the realm of video games, he could truly come into his own this year. Watching his rise in popularity over the last half-decade has been incredible, and it will be interesting to see where his story goes in both mediums. With invisibility and electricity in his toolkit, Spider-Man 2099 and a Symbiote-wearing Peter Parker will have a tough fight on their hands if they get in Miles’ way.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to release in 2023 for PS5.
