Fans of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may be disappointed to learn that the game's long-awaited New Game+ update, which was originally supposed to be released before the end of the year, has been pushed back to 2024. However, the recently revealed changes that are coming to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 alongside New Game+ might just make the longer wait worth it.

Spider-Man 2 didn't feature New Game+ at launch, which came as a surprise to many players. Indeed, New Game+ has become something of a staple in modern gaming, often considered a standard feature. However, implementing New Game+ isn't always as straightforward as it might seem, as issues related to sequence-breaking and numerous other complications often need to be addressed before the mode can be mixed into a game's batter. Since it's not an essential feature in most games, developers will sometimes opt to release New Game+ post-launch with the goal of pushing out the base game earlier. Still, that hasn't stopped fans from lamenting the mode's omission in Spider-Man 2, and many of those fans were surely a bit saddened by Insomniac's recent news regarding its further delay.

Assuming that DLC is released for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games can wrap up a lingering Peter Parker story thread before the next game.

Spider-Man 2's New Game+ Update Is Coming With Even More Changes

Peter Parker character switch

On the bright side, 2024 could be a big year for Spider-Man 2, according to a recent statement from Insomniac. New Game+ might be a highly requested feature, but it's not the only thing that players have been asking for, and Insomniac has announced that it will be adding some of these other long-awaited features in a 2024 patch. Features confirmed to be arriving in 2024 include:

  • New Game+
  • The ability to change the time of day
  • Tendril color selection
  • Mission replays

These changes are significant, especially for those who have already completed the main content of the game, which has drawn criticism for its brevity. The option to modify the time of day is especially welcome, as that was a feature that was included in the launch version of the first Marvel's Spider-Man. This content, especially when coupled with Spider-Man 2's DLC, is sure to satisfy fans who stick with the game into 2024.

What Else Might Come to Spider-Man 2 in 2024

It's worth noting that Insomniac's post suggests that the confirmed features coming alongside New Game+ are only part of the picture, hinting at the potential for even more features and content to drop next year. While it's impossible to know exactly what Insomniac is planning, it wouldn't be unreasonable to speculate that the developer is planning on adding new suits in 2024. A suite of post-launch suits has already been confirmed for Spider-Man 2, and there's a good chance the company plans to release even more cosmetics, if its post-launch support for 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man is any indication.

Then again, Insomniac could be planning something even bigger for its New Game+ update. Earlier this year, Sony announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, which can be purchased for just $10 if someone owns the base PS4 game. This remastered version will come with No Return, a new roguelike game mode built around the fundamentals of Part 2's gameplay. Sony Santa Monica followed this announcement with the release of the free Valhalla DLC, which is a roguelike game mode for God of War Ragnarok. With Sony seemingly committing to roguelike gameplay spin-offs, it's possible that Insomniac, a Sony-owned studio, could be planning something along these lines for Spider-Man 2.

It's important to keep in mind that this is just speculation, and Insomniac could be planning something much more conservative for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in 2024. Even so, the arrival of features like mission replay and time-of-day selection alongside New Game+ is sure to make for an exciting update.
