Not much is known about Spider-Man 2 beyond a teaser trailer and that the game is still planned to release at some point in 2023, but that has not stopped fans from dissecting every shred of information available for hints on what it will entail. One portion of the trailer for Spider-man 2 that fans have honed in on shows a particle effect from Miles Morales that could indicate a new power for the web-slinging savior of Harlem.

Spider-Man Miles Morales came out in November 2020, day in date with the launch of the PlayStation 5, giving Sony a fantastic showpiece to highlight the capabilities of its new console. A more compact experience than the original Marvel's Spider-Man's, Miles Morales took what Insomniac had learned from the first game and refined it, setting the stage for the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2. The upcoming PlayStation Showcase on May 24 could very well be the grand unveiling for Spider-Man 2's new gameplay and mechanics.

The Spider-Man 2 trailer debuted at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, featuring Peter Parker and Miles Morales teaming up to clean up the streets of New York, as well as a short cameo from Venom. Fans have understandably picked apart the trailer to glean anything they can about the upcoming title, and a recent theory shared on Reddit is certainly an intriguing one. At the 40-second mark of the trailer, Miles is seen drop-kicking a foe away from him with his Venom Blast ability, which produces a crackling orange lightning particle effect. However, as the kick lands the lightning turns blue, prompting speculation that it could be a new form of power for Miles. Some fans posit that it could be a harnessed version of the Nuform energy source which has a prominent role in the previous game's storyline. Others have guessed it could be a tease for different effects available for the Venom Blast, though there is nothing concrete as of yet.

The Nuform theory appears to be the most credible, given the ending to Spider-Man Miles Morales, which has Miles absorbing some Nuform as the electrical effect that courses through him begins to turn blue, much like what is shown in the trailer. If proven true, if opens up a fascinating dynamic that Insomniac could explore with its upcoming game, since Nuform exposure is deadly in the long-term. It could set up a scenario where Miles' health declines as he further hones his new power, eventually having to decide between his own well-being and the ability to save others.

Hopefully, fans will not have to wait much longer for more information on Spider-Man 2 as the next PlayStation Showcase is right around the corner. Still slated for 2023, there is plenty of optimism that the game is nearing the end of its development and that a media push for it will be ramping up shortly.
