Many fans have high expectations for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with gamers hoping to see some noticeable improvements over the already-great entries Insomniac has released thus far. These potential upgrades include more side missions that lead to boss fights with Spidey’s rogues' gallery, new movement options like web launches and wall combat, and a combat system that uses both of the webslingers effectively. Additionally, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 fans have made many suit-related requests.

While some the posts about costumes in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are as simple as players wanting to see a specific outfit from a comic or film featured, others have pushed for proper features like suit customization. Given how popular fashion communities are in games like Destiny, this makes sense, as many players would likely have a field day designing and sharing their created costumes online. If Insomniac Games needs an example of how to do suit customization right, the studio need look no further than WB Montreal’s Gotham Knights.

Gotham Knights Gets Suit Customization Right

Gotham Knights features a respectable fifteen suits for each of its four characters, but thanks to the customization options, these suits can be altered in a lot of ways to help make each player’s Bat Family member unique. For starters, there are a variety of colorways that work for the game’s many costumes, with players able to recolor their suit in over a dozen different ways. Players can adjust the shades of red and green on Robin’s outfit, for example, or change his crime fighting garb so that it is entirely white.

Beyond that, gamers can customize several parts of each costume, with three alternate options available for each category. For instance, players can switch through three cowls for Red Hood, alter the boots and gloves for Batgirl's costume, or swap out the symbol on Nightwing’s attire. By letting players adjust individual pieces of each suit, gamers can give Gotham Knights’ cosmetics a personal touch.

How Suit Customization Could Work in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

These adjustable suit features from Gotham Knights would be exciting to see in Insomniac’s next foray into the world of Spider-Man. While Symbiote variants of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s costumes have been rumored, having many alternate colors to pick from for every suit could be a big deal. Just like with Gotham Knights, gamers could unlock over a dozen colorways that can be used on every suit, with players then able to turn the Scarlet Spider suit white or give the Noir suit an orange and blue color scheme.

With Spider-Man having one of the most iconic superhero costumes of all time, allowing players to adjust individual pieces of each suit could be a lot of fun. There have been dozens of different designs for Spidey’s lenses, for example, like the Ultimate Spider-Man design or the zoomable lenses from the MCU films. Letting players swap between these lenses could be a big deal, as would an option to alter the symbols on the front and back of the suit. Insomniac could also let players choose between raised and flat webbing, with web shooter options being yet another area where customization could be made available.

Though suit crafting in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may be a step too far, as a system like that would require a lot of work on Insomniac’s part, customization like Gotham Knights seems a lot more viable. Hopefully, Insomniac Games takes notes from Gotham Knights when it comes to cosmetics. While WB Montreal’s latest game has understandably been criticized for performance issues and various glitches, one thing that nearly every player has been impressed by is the game’s approach to alternate costumes. Hopefully, other superhero games take note, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being the first to follow in Gotham Knights’ footsteps.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to release in 2023 for PS5.
