An eagle-eyed fan has discovered an interesting connection between Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and the reveal trailer for Marvel'sSpider-Man 2 from 2021. This discovery may alleviate the concerns that some may have about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being set in New York again.

The reveal trailer for Spider-Man 2 at the PlayStation Showcase in 2021 was a very important piece of promotion for the upcoming sequel. This trailer confirmed many important elements about the game, including a new mechanical armed suit for Peter Parker, the fact that Miles Morales will be returning to the game, and the reveal that Venom will make an appearance as well. These are the obvious elements that the trailer shows off, but one fan noticed something else was being hinted at in the background of almost every scene.

Reddit user KaZ_02 posted a slideshow of images comparing the location used in the 2021 trailer to the same area of New York City from Marvel’s Spider-Man. The first two images of the slideshow establish that the area is in the Greenwich section of the city, and the rest of the images showcase the minor differences in detail between the original game and the sequel. Most of these details are smaller, with slightly changed locations of certain buildings, while other changes are more stark, like adding a store named Mikal’s on one of the street corners. The slideshow's final image is a collage highlighting all the differences between both games in red outlines.

KaZ_02 assumed that the location was created for the reveal trailer, but after some detective work on their part, they realized that this same area was in the original game. The biggest addition to this spot of New York City in Spider-Man 2 is Mikal’s, which KaZ_02 speculates may be an important landmark or connected to a new character in the story. The street signs outside Mikal’s have been changed as well. In the original game, the street signs read “Goodman and Greenwich” and in the sequel, they read “Greenwich and Morton.”

Some fans of the upcoming sequel are worried that Spider-Man 2’s map will feel the same as before. Similar concerns were raised for other recent sequels, such as God of War: Ragnarok and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. As video games get more expensive to produce, studios seem more willing to reuse previous maps to save on cost. Hopefully, in Spider-Man 2, New York City will be filled with detailed changes around every corner so that the city has a fresh feel to it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20 for PlayStation 5.
