Players will indeed be able to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Insomniac has just shed light on how it works. Both Spider-heroes were confirmed as playable characters in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 after starring in their own separate web-swinging adventures, and fans have been wondering how Insomniac would handle alternating between Peter and Miles during their latest battle to protect New York City from deadly villains like Venom and Kraven the Hunter.

These fans finally got a clue about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s potential character-switching mechanics during last week’s PlayStation Showcase livestream. At the very end of the show, Insomniac showed off a new Spider-Man 2 trailer that featured Peter in his new Symbiote costume violently taking down Kraven’s minions as they hunt for the Lizard. After this intense battle, Peter calls Miles to tell him about Kraven’s plans, which leads to a button prompt that shifts control to the younger Spider-Man as he searches for the mutated Dr. Connors in Harlem.

This seems to confirm that players will get to manually switch control between Peter and Miles throughout Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and now Insomniac is shedding light on how this will work. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar explained that the game’s story will shift between Spider-Men during set moments. However, players will also get to switch heroes at will while exploring the open world of New York City, with certain sidequests and other content being specifically crafted for either Peter or Miles.

Intihar also noted that this character switching will tie into Spider-Man 2's three distinct skill trees, which offer Symbiote-enhanced powers for Peter, electric Venom Blast abilities for Miles, and a standard set of Spider-skills that both web-slingers share. He says that his team wanted to give players a sense of familiarity while alternating between the two Spideys while allowing for flexibility in upgrading their movesets. When asked if Spider-Man 2 will feature sections with other characters like Marvel’s Spider-Man’s controversial Mary Jane segments, Intihar declined to comment.

One of the many areas of discussion among fans was if Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would let players switch control between Peter and Miles at will, to the point where some imagined the game using a system similar to the one in Grand Theft Auto 5. Now Insomniac has revealed how this mechanic will work, with players being locked to one Spider-Man during story missions and free to shift between the pair during freeform exploration. This could add a whole new element of replayability to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as Peter and Miles will each have their own sidequests and secrets to discover while swinging around New York City.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launches this fall, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
