SPOILERS AHEAD FOR MARVEL'S MIDNIGHT SUNSMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ ending is as much a spectacle as it is satisfying in gameplay. Closure is provided for almost all characters aside from the late unlock of Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Hulk, and it concludes with an immense cliffhanger for where the narrative could be headed in potential DLC or a sequel. This ending is ambiguous in terms of whether it would continue the relationships players have developed with their squad mates, but a few implications point in a particular direction.

Marvel fans will need no introduction to Doctor Doom, easily one of Marvel’s most distinguishable and powerful villains. While he is popular, he has not been given the spotlight in a while. It is surprising to see Doctor Doom in an explicit tease that does not need to name-drop the character directly in order for fans to acknowledge him, especially if it means he could potentially be the antagonist in a Marvel’s Midnight Suns sequel.

Doctor Doom is Established Throughout Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Doctor Doom is well-established in Marvel’s Midnight Suns through subtextual lore. If players have been enjoying exploring the Abbey grounds and interacting with prompts in the library, they may have seen an abridged bit of literature penned by Doctor Doom alongside other texts that reference characters in the Marvel universe. Doctor Doom is also featured in one of Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ collectible tarot cards, depicted as the Magician. This holds no significance beyond being a fun Easter egg until fans have the context of Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ post-credits scene.

Otherwise, there is no mention of characters who have gone toe-to-toe with Doctor Doom, leaving his history with this take on the iconic Marvel characters up to interpretation. It is plausible that the Avengers have met him before, but it would be great if a Marvel’s Midnight Suns sequel branched out further to include more characters in his sphere of influence.

Doctor Doom Would Be a Great Villain Choice for Marvel’s Midnight Suns 2

It is not officially confirmed whether Doctor Doom will be the villain in a potential sequel, but this post-credits scene makes it seem likely that Firaxis has concrete plans to reprise him. Marvel’s Midnight Suns will feature playable Season Pass characters that may or may not come with their own narrative expansions, but Doctor Doom would be better as the main antagonist in a full-fledged sequel.

Firaxis will hopefully reserve Doctor Doom until a Marvel’s Midnight Suns sequel can be exclusive to current-gen platforms. If Doctor Doom possesses the Darkhold, it will be interesting to see what he plans to accomplish, or if he will be able to withstand Chthon’s corruption more successfully than Lilith. Likewise, Doctor Doom would make sense as a villain using his own Doombot minions, effectively substituting Lilith’s Lilin or Hydra goons.

There are also multiple Fantastic Four references in Marvel’s Midnight Suns that establish them in this universe, and with Doctor Doom as a villain there may be no better characters able to meet him in battle. This way, the Midnight Suns could seek the help of Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Benjamin Grimm at the Baxter Building as an alternate hub world in order to ascertain their expertise. It's a scenario tailor made for a strong sequel, but fans will have to wait and see what Firaxis is planning.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions coming later.
