Not including the create-a-character 'Hunter', there are 13 different Heroes that players can take control of in Marvel's Midnight Suns. Heroes in this game each have their own unique gimmicks, passives, cards, and general playstyles.

And, while Marvel's Midnight Suns does start pretty easy in terms of difficulty, it ramps up pretty quickly. So, let's go through each of the Heroes and talk about which of their cards players should Upgrade first.

Disclaimer: No Epic or Legendary Cards were used as they can't really be obtained 'early on'.

Blade

Marvel Midnight Suns - Blade's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Blade Leaning Against Wall In Daytime In Cutscene

First up is Blade, a man who once said "it's open season on all suckheads" with a straight face. In-game he's a powerhouse that's meant to play entirely around his innate Bleed mechanics. Sadly, because of how Bleed works in Midnight Suns, Blade quickly falls off, but here are the cards that keep him relevant.

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Stake

Common

Very simple, it does a ton of damage and has Lifesteal. When upgraded it's Blade's most reliable sustain tool in combat.

Savage

Rare

This card is an absolute Block-melter, and upgrading it just makes it that much more efficient.

The Hunger

Rare

The Hunger actually utilizes Bleed stacks in an amazing way. But, when upgraded, it also becomes a great healing tool that's literally free to use.

Captain America

Marvel Midnight Suns - Captain America's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Cap Looking Off Camera In-Game

Moving on from one of the more 'underground' heroes to the literal head of the Avengers, it's Captain America. Cap is Midnight Sun's most pure 'tank' character and he does his job well by using Taunts, Counters, and inflicting Weak. His best immediate upgrades are:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Shield Bounce

Common

By default, this move already Taunts all enemies in an area, but when upgraded it also inflicts Weak on them.

Dig In

Rare

Already a great card but when upgraded, it gets exponentially better as it also gives him Counter. Recommended to use it in combination with The Best Defense.

Tactician

Rare

In Midnight Suns it's actually not all that common to find cards that give allies Block, so this card is very helpful.

Captain Marvel

Marvel Midnight Suns - Captain Marvel's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Her Going Binary In Cutscene

Captain Marvel is a bit of a mixed character in terms of her 'role'. She has a lot of cards around Taunting and Blocking, but the reason she wants to build up Block is to maintain her Binary transformation. With that in mind her best immediate upgrades are:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Knee Strike

Common

One of her most basic moves, but a crucial tool for building cheap and immediate Block.

Photon Beam

Common

With this upgrade, the already overpowered Photon Beam does everything it already did, but better.

Bring It On

Rare

Having Counter and Resist active at the same time is one of the most overpowered combinations out there.

Dr. Strange

Marvel Midnight Suns - Dr Strange's Best Card Upgrades Over Image OF Strange Using Magic In-Game

Dr. Strange is another unique case as his whole kit is based around generating Heroism through cards or his Greater Good passive.

RELATED: Marvel Heroes Who Are Good But Not Nice

Then, using that Heroism, Strange can deal extra damage with his cards that have the Enhanced keyword. To best cards to focus on first are:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Agamotto's Gaze

Common

This card is where a lot of people get confused with Dr. Strange's playstyle and switch off him, and it's a shame. Basically, it's a fantastic card to set up for the next turn.

Crimson Bands of Cyttorak

Rare

This is one of the rare cards that has the Bind status effect. But, when upgraded it also gets Vulnerable, which can trivialize boss encounters.

Bolt of Balthakk

Rare

A bit basic compared to his other cards, but this upgraded Bolt inflicts a whole lot of pain using either 4 or 8 Heroism.

Ghost Rider

Marvel Midnight Suns - Ghost Rider's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Ghost Rider Standing In Fire In-Game

Ghost Rider, like Dr. Strange, is another Hero that has a relatively high skill ceiling and high damage. He's based around the idea of gaining Souls through KOs and then using those Souls in different ways. To easily get his gameplay loop going, players should upgrade:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Drain Soul

Common

Since Ghost Rider's whole loop is based around generating these cards, it only makes sense to upgrade them.

Hellmouth

Common

Drops are basically anything that an enemy can be 'pushed' to fall into, from a rooftop to a hell portal. And, the percentage of knocking them in successfully is based on their remaining HP. Therefore, upgrading Hellmouth with more damage and the Strengthened keyword is an obvious choice.

Straight To Hell

Rare

Because players are constantly balancing Ghost Rider's Health as per his playstyle, a healing card is a huge help overall, and this one even replaces him with a Drop.

Hulk

Marvel Midnight Suns - Hulk's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Hulk In-Game Roaring Angrily

Now it almost seems unnecessary to mention Hulk's cards, given how late into the game he's unlocked. But, for those interested in the post-game content, his challenge mission, or even NG+, here are his best options:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Challenging Roar

Common

Just an absurdly useful Taunt tool that also enables Hulk to decimate enemies with Rage-amplified Counter.

Thunderclap

Common

Knockback and Stun are some of the game's best debuffs, and being able to apply them in an area can make fights a breeze.

Crush

Rare

A fantastic damage and Rage-building tool that works great in combination with Thunderclap.

Hunter

Marvel Midnight Suns - Hunter's Best Card Upgrades Over image Of Hunter Waking Up In Coffin

The Hunter is probably the most unique case on here, and that's even excluding the fact that it's the player's 'create-a-character'. The Hunter has cards along a general path, a light path, and a dark path, all of which are influenced by choices made during the main and side content. This gives them the highest total pool of cards at 30, so let's go over some of the best cards to upgrade:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Fortify

Common

One of the better Counter cards in the game, and even more so when upgraded.

Inspire

Common

When upgraded, Inspire is free to play, meaning it suddenly jumps from being rarely used to always used.

Heal

Common

Just a fantastic healing card overall, and one of the main reasons players go the light path in the early game.

Guarding Strike

Rare

This might be one of the only examples in the game of a card that is usually better kept in hand than played.

Last Sight

Rare

In general Last Sight is just a very Heroism cheap option to deal damage and also basically guarantee Hunter's safety.

Dark Blessing

Rare

Dark Blessing is a card that perfectly encapsulates a 'high-risk, high-reward playstyle.

Iron Man

Marvel Midnight Suns - Iron Man's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Iron Man Charging Repulsor

Tony Stark and his iconic Iron Man suit have probably one of the more inventive gimmicks in Midnight Suns with his Redraw systems.

RELATED: Midnight Suns: All Blade Cards, Ranked

When using Redraw on Tony's cards, the cards aren't redrawn but rather stay in hand with extra effects. To put it more simply, upgrade these cards first:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Mark Target

Common

This upgrade shines most when Iron Man is in a party with other Heroes who are great at pushing the enemies into one big clump (aka Spider-Man or Magik).

Surgical Strike

Common

Without a doubt, Surgical Strike is Iron Man's best card if the player is fine with his cards hogging all of the space in hand.

Heads Up

Rare

Not only does this card have the option of giving Block to Allies, but when upgraded it also adds to the player's Redraw counter.

Magik

Marvel Midnight Suns - Magik's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Her Activating Limbo Portal In Cutscene

Magik is absolutely the perfect character for Midnight Suns players who just love tossing the enemies around into electrical boxes, walls, and even each other. So, players who want to use her Limbo Portal potential to the fullest should upgrade:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Limbo Portal

Common

By default Magik's Limbo Portals are free to play. But, in the rare instance, a player draws a card or looks at their hand and a Limbo Portal is not there, upgrading it means there are extra benefits to a Limbo Portal on redraw.

Gather

Common

Whereas Ghost Rider can create Drops on the map or even replace himself with one for a turn, Magik can do it with enemies and allies using upgraded Banish.

Banish

Rare

Gather, at first, may seem like the perfect card to gather enemies all together for one big AoE move (and it is). But most commonly, players use this wide AoE early-game to take care of all the basic one-hit mobs in one card.

Nico Minoru

Marvel Midnight Suns - Nico's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Her Using Magic Spell In-Game

Nico is probably the best example out of the entire roster of a 'support' Hero. Her Roulette keyword, however, adds a layer of randomness that some players seem to love and others seem to really dislike. Regardless of either side, these card upgrades are a must-have:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Empower

Common

Empower is likely the card that anyone who plays Nico gravitates to and for good reason.

Curse

Common

While there is the Roulette factor of this card to consider, it only has 4 potential debuffs it can roll between. Players will either get the ability to apply Stun, 2 Marked, 2 Vulnerable, or 2 Weak, and all of these debuffs are fantastic.

Restore

Rare

When upgraded, players can strategically use it only when characters are below 50 percent HP to prevent it from being discarded so they always have a heal on standby.

Scarlet Witch

Marvel Midnight Suns - Scarlet Witch's Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Her In-Game

Compared to a lot of the other Heroes on here, Scarlet Witch feels like she's in an odd spot.

RELATED: Marvel Snap: The Best Cards To Combo With Deadpool, Ranked

She's a character unlocked relatively late based on having a lot of AoE attacks that either inflict some status effect and deal some damage or just deal tons of damage through Hexes. Still, these card upgrades absolutely make a difference:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Hex Bolt

Common

This seems to be Wanda's go-to card as every time she uses it the card and any other Hex Bolts in her deck get +1 Chain, leading to some pretty absurd levels of Chained attacks.

Hex Field

Common

When upgraded and used in combination with Unleashed, this can do some pretty hefty damage to a lot of enemies at once.

Unleashed

Common

When upgraded, this bonus to her AoE range jumps from 25 to 40 percent for 2 turns, which makes a pretty noticeable difference.

Spider-Man

Marvel Midnight Suns - Spider Mans Best Card Upgrades Over Image Of Him In-Game

Spider-Man is the other environmental attack-based Hero alongside Magik, but he probably excels at it just a little bit more. These cards seemed to help players use the environment the most when upgraded:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Thwip

Common

Bind is an absurdly useful status effect, especially against bosses, and the extra environment damage is just an added bonus.

Spidey Sense

Common

Fast reduces the cost of all Spidey's Heroic Cards by 1 for that turn, which is huge. But, when upgraded, he also gets 2 Resist.

Opportunist

Rare

Basically just gives Spider-Man the freedom to do whatever environmental attacks he wants for the next two attacks. When upgraded, it also increases the damage they do.

Wolverine

Marvel Midnight Suns - Wolverines Best Cards Over Image Of Him In-Game

Last up is Wolverine, the short king of the Midnight Suns crew. Logan is first encountered relatively early on in this long game when Hunter is duking it out with Sabertooth. From there he joins the team as a pseudo-tank. And, these are the cards in his deck to upgrade to excel with his Taunt and Lifesteal-based playstyle:

Card Name

Rarity

Reasoning

Chain Swipes

Common

When upgraded, this actually becomes a great debuff tool through the Full Combo added benefit.

Piercing Slash

Rare

Similar to Blade's Savage card, this is worth upgrading so that Wolverine has an option for getting rid of enemy Blocks quickly.

Stink of Fear

Rare

When upgraded, this AoE Taunt and Counter also applies Weak to all enemies in the AoE.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is available now for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
