Eidos-Montreal's upcoming Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy game is looking quite promising, with the brand-new single player adventure putting players in the space boots of team leader Star-Lord. The game was first revealed at E3 of this year, with the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy confirming that one aspect of the game that is brought over from its MCU counterpart will be the 80s retro soundtrack. An in-game band known as Star-Lord has original tracks in the game, with Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix sharing a set of music videos for "Zero to Hero" - a single from this in-game band. The game's licensed songs have also been confirmed.
The decision to go with an 80s-inspired soundtrack for the game has been discussed before. A lot of the music is integral to the experience of Guardians of the Galaxy, where it is described as being "infused in the DNA of the game" according to the developers. This includes the player being able to select their own battle themes during combat gameplay. Some of the songs that will be included in the game are "The Final Countdown" by EUROPE, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears For Fears, and even "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, the full list being viewable on Square Enix's website.
Eidos-Montreal's two new music videos for the "Zero to Hero" single are worth a watch, especially because the in-game band Star-Lord is where Quill got his name in this universe. The first of the videos is short and animated, with an artstyle reminiscent of other cartoons from the 80s. It somewhat resembles He-Man: Masters of the Universe, and each member of the band goes travel the galaxy to take on an intergalactic threat. To complete the retraux nature of the video, the aspect ratio is 4:3 and there's a grainy VHS effect over it, too.
The other music video is a complete version of song by Star-Lord, with both live-action and animated segments being utilized. The same aspect ratio and VHS grain effects are also present in this video, however. Many fans praised the music videos, with some saying that they have captured the spirit of Guardians of the Galaxy.
With all of this 80s liscensed music used, fans who wish to stream the game might have to contend with DMCA music claims. While Guardians of the Galaxy does have a stream friendly mode, it doesn't state if the music by Star-Lord will or will not be a part it. Regardless, fans are already looking forward to the next adventure with the galactic superheroes, and this music is clearly something to look forward to.
Guardians of the Galaxy launches October 26 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
