Crystal Dynamics officially confirms that the studio is ending support for Marvel’s Avengers. This comes only a few hours after news broke that Crystal Dynamics was planning such an announcement regarding Marvel's Avengers.

Developer Crystal Dynamics and Publisher Square Enix released the action-adventure brawler game in September 2020. Marvel’s Avengers stars the young superheroine Ms. Marvel as she reunites the scattered Avengers to battle Marvel villains and the sinister corporation Advanced Idea Mechanics, also known as AIM. Crystal Dynamics released multiple rounds of new content since Marvel’s Avengers launched, some of which were quite well received. However, they haven’t been enough to reverse the game’s fading popularity.

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics just announced that Marvel’s Avengers would not receive any new content after the launch of Update 2.8 on March 31, 2023. This will be the first step in Crystal Dynamics’ plan to sunset Marvel's Avengers and conclude all official support on September 30, 2023. However, players will still be able to experience the game in both singleplayer and multiplayer modes. The developer also plans to turn off Marvel’s Avengers’ cosmetic marketplace on March 31. At that point, the game will stop selling Credits, all purchased Credits will be converted to other resources, and all cosmetic items will be available for free.

Marvel's Avengers Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel and Iron Man

Marvel's Avengers players can refer to a chart on the game’s website to see which in-game resources they are set to receive. Payouts fall into five brackets covering Credit balances ranging from 1 to 24,999. All players will receive a payout in Units, Fragments, Upgrade Modules, Polychoron, and DNA Keys. Players with 25,000 Credits or more will receive the maximum allowable amount of all five in-game resources. The announcement on the Marvel’s Avengers website also described the free cosmetics as a way to thank fans for supporting the game.

The blog post also contained an FAQ restating and clarifying the information covered in the announcement message. This included confirmation that Crystal Dynamics plans to stop selling Marvel’s Avengers for all platforms and on all storefronts starting September 30, 2023. The game will also leave Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus on the same date. However, players who purchase preowned copies after September 2023 will still be able to play the game and have free access to all cosmetic items in Marvel’s Avengers. The FAQ also clarified the end of support included the suspension of all customer service for Marvel’s Avengers on September 30.

While unfortunate for fans, this suspension of support should not be surprising for anyone following news around the game. Reports emerged in December 2022 that Crystal Dynamics planned to stop supporting Marvel’s Avengers in 2023, with similar rumors surfacing earlier today. One can’t help but wonder if the coverage may have encouraged Crystal Dynamics to make the announcement sooner instead of later.

Marvel’s Avengers is available on PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
