There are a few mysteries throughout Marvel's Avengers that players learn more about over the course of the game. One mystery in particular comes fairly late in the story, but some players may be impatient to learn more. Please note that this post will have MAJOR SPOILERS for Marvel's Avengers.

Near the end of Marvel's Avengers, players find out that Captain America is actually the one who destroyed the Chimera by smashing the Terrigen Crystal reactor with his shield. This explosion is what caused A-Day and ultimately led to the creation of the Inhumans, so it's safe to say that some fans may be curious as to why exactly he did it. As one might expect, there's a good reason for it, but explaining it will take some background information.

Here is why Captain America destroyed the Chimera in Marvel's Avengers.

Captain America's "Death" and the Terrigen Crystal

Throughout Marvel's Avengers, players are led to believe that Captain America died during A-Day after the Chimera was destroyed. Kamala Khan finds video evidence supporting this theory, seemingly showing Captain America desperately trying to stop the explosion. However, later in the game, it's discovered that Captain America actually smashed the Terrigen Crystal reactor himself, in turn causing the explosion that killed a significant number of people and converted others into super-powered Inhumans.

The revelation that Cap was responsible for destroying the Terrigen reactor sends shockwaves throughout the Avengers team, causing some serious infighting, with Iron Man and Hulk going at it. However, Kamala watches back footage of Bruce Banner's interrogation of AIM scientist Monica Rappaccinni, and realizes that AIM has a secret base that's not on Earth, but rather in the Ambrosia satellite. This revelation gives the Avengers new purpose and brings them back together.

Iron Man travels to Ambrosia to investigate, and it's there where Captain America's fate is revealed. As it turns out, Cap didn't die on A-Day. Instead AIM has been harvesting blood from his body, and using that blood for its experiments. Shortly after saving Captain America, Iron Man asks him why he smashed the Terrigen Crystal reactor and destroyed the Chimera, and Cap offers an ominous explanation.

Kree Sentry

The reason why Captain America destroyed the Chimera was because he detected a heat signature rising out of the ocean, seemingly being pulled up by the Terrigen Crystal. Had it succeeded, it would have likely destroyed the entirety of San Francisco. So essentially, Cap made the decision to avoid an even more significant tragedy than the one that occurred on A-Day. But it's not explained what this "heat signature" is until the game's final mission.

AIM sets up a base around the San Andreas fault, where the mysterious object resides, so that MODOK can retrieve it from the ocean. The Avengers arrive on the scene and have an intense boss battle with MODOK, seemingly defeating him. However, MODOK is able to summon the mysterious object from the ocean: a massive Kree Sentry robot, with MODOK now in control.

Luckily, Kamala is able to use her Embiggen powers to grow to an immense size and defeat the Kree Sentry in a brawl, destroying it and saving the rest of the Avengers in the process.

Marvel's Avengers is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
