The classic Marvel vs. Capcom games are finally coming to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam this year in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a compilation of seven old-school arcade titles. Back before Marvel became the cinematic juggernaut it is today, the House of Ideas licensed some of its most famous mutants to Capcom for X-Men: Children of the Atom, an arcade fighting game that capitalized on the then-currently running X-Men: The Animated Series - and would eventually spawn the larger Marvel vs. Capcom franchise.
Not too long after X-Men: Children of the Atom, Capcom would team up with Marvel again for Marvel Super Heroes, this time drawing from a larger pool of Marvel heroes and villains. The World Warriors of Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise would soon be thrown into the mix for X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, which in turn would lead to a full-blown collision of universes in 1998’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes. This blockbuster crossover would see a handful of sequels and inspire other Capcom collaborations, though there haven’t been any new entries since the divisive Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite in 2017.
Capcom Survey Reveals Franchises Fans Most Want to See Return

While the gaming world waits for a new Marvel vs. Capcom sequel, fans will at least be able to dive into the classics that started it all later this year. One of the new games announced during June 18’s Nintendo Direct livestream was Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a collection of seven classic entries in Marvel and Capcom’s beloved crossover series. The games in this compilation are X-Men Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom Clash of Super Heroes, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and the 1993 beat ‘em-up The Punisher.

As demonstrated in the recent Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics trailer, the games will retain all the pulse-pounding action and flashy combos that players fell in love with while playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 in the arcade, with a few modern tricks and special features. Included in the collection are the original theme songs for the games, development docs, and never-before-seen artwork, and offline players can view the original marquee cards for a more authentic experience. Online play will feature rollback netcode, casual matches, lobby matches, and ranked matches.
Newcomers will also be able to hone their skills using new training settings and one-button specials, while seasoned Marvel vs. Capcom players can now save their progress and reload after a particularly punishing boss fight. While the trailer at this week’s Nintendo Direct emphasized the Switch version of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, it will also be available for Steam and PlayStation 4 later this year.
