During Marvel Snap's Rise of the Phoenix season, a new contender for the title of a must-have card has emerged in Magik following a crucial buff to her card. Despite new cards being added to Marvel Snap throughout the season like Jean Grey, Echo, and Legion, it's Magik that has stood out among the crowd to become a staple card in most of the game's top decks. The rise of Magik in Marvel Snap's meta seems sudden, but it makes sense given the potential her ability holds, and now that the obstacles that held her back have been removed, it's clear why she dominates most matches.
Although Marvel Snap has faced some controversy over its implementation of Spotlight Caches for acquiring new cards, many of the recent changes made to existing cards have helped balance the gameplay tremendously. No longer are decks revolving around cards like Galactus and High Evolutionary the menace they once were, and the rise of Magik in the meta has expanded the types of decks at the top thanks to her versatility. As a result, the meta for Marvel Snap is in a pretty good place, with the presence of Magik ultimately being a welcome change.
One Simple Change Made Marvel Snap’s Magik a Must-Use Card
Marvel Snap's Magik is a 3-Cost/2-Power card with the On Reveal ability to change the location where she is played to Limbo, giving the current match a Turn 7, but with the caveat that she can't be played on Turn 5. Although her ability remains unchanged, she was previously a 5-Cost/3-Power card, meaning she had to be played on Turn 5 unless the player was able to play her a turn earlier due to an effect like Wave's. The simple act of reducing her Cost to 3 has made her much more versatile as fans can play her much earlier and reserve their Turn 5 play for a much stronger card.
With this new lower Cost, Magik has been able to fit into numerous decks with ease to help extend the match and give players an extra turn to enact their strategy. The most popular deck type to feature Magik in this current meta is the Negative Surfer archetype which revolves around the use of Mr. Negative and Silver Surfer to bring out several cards that become useful when their Cost and Power are swapped. As a 3-Cost card, Magik now benefits from Silver Surfer's ability while also helping extend the game and giving players extra time to play Mr. Negative to great effect.
Another popular deck type to feature Magik in the current Marvel Snap meta is the destroy archetype, which also benefits from the extra turn Magik provides. The goal of this deck is to destroy as many cards as possible leading up to the end of the game where players can play Knull on Turn 6, then use Turn 7 from Magik to play Mystique to copy Knull's ability and double the power of destruction. Being able to play a powered-up Knull, Mystique, and the destroy deck staple Death can quickly overwhelm opponents, making it clear why the seventh turn Magik provides is so useful.
Magik's ability is also useful for more than just extending the game, as she can be used like a more consistent version of Scarlet Witch to change an adverse location into Limbo. She's not without her downsides, though, as a card like Storm can overturn her Limbo and cause it to become Flooded instead, or Marvel Snap's latest addition Legion can replace all other locations with the one he is played at, also overwriting Limbo. Players putting her in decks alongside cards like Knull, Mystique, and Wong will also have to watch out for Rogue and Enchantress removing their Ongoing abilities and slowing the momentum Magik creates.
