  • The Hulk declared war on Iron Man and other heroes after being sent away by Stark and the Illuminati, resulting in a frosty dynamic between them.

After years brimming just below the surface of Marvel's biggest heroes, Iron Man established himself as the comic book juggernaut's arguable leading man thanks to the Civil War event in '07 followed by Robert Downey Jr.'s beloved MCU rendition of the character that started in '08. Presented as brash, audacious, and with a dark, selfish past, Tony Stark has frequently rubbed other characters the wrong way.

10 Marvel Characters Who Have Appeared In The Most Games

These Marvel characters have had the most representations in the gaming world.

The tech genius rarely pulls punches and has frequently been depicted as diving head-on into alarmingly dangerous problem-solving strategies. Even Steve Rogers, Stark's longtime pal in Avengers stories, ultimately threw down with the industrialist during Civil War, and other supposed friends such as Black Panther and Hank Pym have had their fair share of issues with him. However, among the many rivalries and broken friendships, a select few stand out for having had a deeply personal hatred of Tony Stark at different points. From ideological clashes to simply not appreciating his antics, the following heroes probably don't have the armored Avenger on their Christmas list.

5 Luke Cage Has Never Been Fond Of Tony Stark

The near-indestructible powerhouse has made no bones about his disdain for Iron Man over the years. Keeping an ear to the streets, Cage has frequently shown a humanitarian propensity for putting the good and safety of others ahead of everything else over the course of his crime-fighting career.

To Cage, Stark's wealth, genius, and outlandish lifestyle essentially prevent him from being in touch with more regular life and problems. As is so often the case with Iron Man, the former Power-Man's disdain for the high-tech hero is readily apparent during Civil War. Disgusted by Stark's approach to potentially registering superheroes, Cage is quick to side with Captain America and go underground. An early incident between them during Len Wein's work on the Power Man series saw Cage even punch through Iron Man's armor during a dispute that quickly turned physical. While their issues aren't quite as grand-scale as some of Tony Stark's other superhero beefs in recent years, the clash of opposite personalities and approaches to crime fighting makes this a compelling, underrated dynamic.

The 11 Most Iconic Tomboys In Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics has introduced several tomboy characters throughout its history. These individuals are the most iconic of the bunch.

Interestingly, Civil War II sees Iron Man largely in the opposite role he enjoyed in the original story. Now the one seemingly rebelling and on the run, Stark ultimately falls in defeat to the scarily powerful Danvers after a bleak feud that tears apart the heroes' dynamics on Earth and even leads to the surprise death of Bruce Banner. The pair's feud largely revolves around Ulysses, an Inhuman who has the ability to see into the future. While Danvers wants to put his powers to use for predictive policing, Stark stands morally opposed to using future visions to potentially arrest and take down others. The pair's bitter rivalry dominated Marvel Comics at the time and portrayed both characters in noticeably darker lights than usual.

3 The Hulk Once Declared War On Iron Man And Many Other Heroes

Marvel's most destructive character has a testy dynamic with many heroes due to his volatile, often city-destroying antics and danger. For Iron Man, the Hulk's complete annihilation of Las Vegas was one setback too many.

Marvel: 19 Strongest Hulks In The Comics, Ranked

While there are several different forms of Hulk, there are some that are stronger than others, and this list shows the strongest thus far.

In agreement with the rest of the secretive Illuminati group, Stark arranged for Bruce Banner to be cut loose on a planet far, far away. To get him on the ship, Stark put forward a bogus mission explanation that The Hulk was needed for. Unsurprisingly, when the green giant finally made it back to Earth, he was brimming with vengeful hatred. After the ship used to get rid of him in the first place blew up and killed his pregnant wife, The Hulk essentially declares war on every member of The Illuminati, including Iron Man, and forces many of them to fight as gladiators as punishment. While Stark ultimately got the better of the emerald powerhouse, this classic tale still looms large in The Incredible Hulk mythos and has maintained a frosty dynamic between the pair ever since.

2 Spider-Man Went Through Hell Thanks To Iron Man During Civil War

The wall-crawler has had a volatile dynamic with Iron Man over the years. During Civil War, Parker and Stark grew close, with Spidey even revealing his secret identity to the world as a show of commitment to Iron Man's cause.

However, after a change of heart due to Stark's unscrupulous methods, Spider-Man quickly became a fugitive with his life in complete disarray due to his budding, deeply personal feud with the Stark Industries head honcho. While the infamous One More Day arc put a stop to Parker's Civil War catastrophe and restored the privacy of his alter ego, the dark dynamic between him and Iron Man largely painted the power suit maestro in a villainous light. Needless to say, the pair's dynamic in the comics is a far cry from the wholesome, mentor/protégé relationship the two enjoyed in the MCU.

1 Thor Has Brutally Clashed With Iron Man More Than Once

The God of Thunder has had several disastrous issues with Tony Stark over the years. Following the death of Odin, Thor took over Asgard and began getting involved in political affairs on Earth, something that simply didn't sit right with Iron Man.

The result was a no-holds-barred brawl between the pair, as Stark revealed a new suit partly made via Asgardian magic to rival Thor's power. Years went by with the Mjolnir-wielding warrior out of the Avengers' picture until Iron Man had the jaw-dropping audacity to reveal a Thor clone during Civil War. Rightly disgusted by the use of his DNA in such a shocking manner, Thor brutally beat Stark to within an inch of his life when the pair met again, adding his name to the long list of characters furious with the tech whiz following the events of the original Civil War event.
