Skydance has finally revealed the first trailer for its upcoming WW2 Marvel game, now titled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, after having first announced the project back in 2021. The reveal trailer for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hyrda showcases its cast of characters, including iconic Marvel heroes like Captain America and Black Panther, within its setting of Occupied Paris during the Second World War. While the game looks like it will focus on Captain America and Black Panther, its setting opens the door for a pair of X-Men characters to appear in some way.

Aside from Captain America and Black Panther, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra also introduces the characters Gabriel Jones, a member of the Howling Commandos, and Nanali, leader of the Wakandan spy network in Paris, to round out its cast. It's not yet clear the roles all of these characters will play within the game, but a story set during World War 2 that sees players fighting Nazis and the emerging threat of Hydra has the potential to include some of Marvel's most intense themes. A Marvel game set during WW2 would also be the perfect chance to reference Magneto and Mister Sinister, two X-Men characters who were important players in the Marvel Universe during this era.

Skydance's WW2 Marvel game has finally had its title officially revealed following its leak and there's already a lot to unpack regarding it.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra Should Reference X-Men’s Magneto and Mister Sinister

World War 2 was a dark time in world history, and characters in the Marvel Universe were equally affected by this conflict. One of the most infamous Marvel characters present during the Holocaust was X-Men archnemesis Magneto, known as Max Eisenhart at the time. As a child of a middle-class Jewish family in Germany, Max was captured and imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943, where he witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust firsthand, laying the foundation for this future belief that humanity deserved to be subjugated by mutants.

During his imprisonment, Magneto was forced to work as a Sonderkommando, a prisoner who helped dispose of bodies, and eventually escaped during an uprising staged by his fellow Sonderkommandos against their Nazi captors.

While imprisoned at Auschwitz, Magneto would also encounter another of the X-Men's most infamous villains, the mad geneticist Mister Sinister. Originally a Victorian-era geneticist named Nathaniel Essex, Mister Sinister was created when the mutant Apocalypse turned the scientist into one of his ageless prelates. Having become Mister Sinister, Essex created four clones of himself, one of which would go on to work alongside Josef Mengele at Auschwitz, conducting genetic experiments on the concentration camp's prisoners and earning the nickname "Nosferatu" due to his eerily pale skin.

It's unlikely that Magneto and Mister Sinister would appear directly in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra given that their stories are large enough to be games in themselves. With Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra also seeming to be set primarily in Occupied Paris, it's also unlikely players would end up traveling to Auschwitz in German-occupied Poland during the game's story. However, there are some ways the game could reference these characters, acknowledging their existence during this time and adding details to help flesh out the greater Marvel Universe the game is set within.

A simple way the game could reference these X-Men characters is through in-game dialogue, perhaps having one of the characters overhear Nazi soldiers discussing the experiments of Mister Sinister at Auschwitz, or referring to him by his Nosferatu moniker. Another way these characters could be mentioned is through in-game texts and documents players come across, potentially detailing an incident where one of the Sonderkommandos at Auschwitz seemed to move a metal pole with his mind. There are a variety of subtle ways Magneto and Mister Sinister could have cameos or references hidden in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra that the game shouldn't pass up the chance to include.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is scheduled to release sometime in 2025.
