There is no doubt that Super Mario Bros. Wonder stands out as a Mario platformer, as it revamped various aspects of the classic 2D Mario formula. The game focuses on newly introduced concepts that are making their debut in the series, such as Wonder Seeds, Wonder Flowers, and Flower Coins.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder: How to Change Character

Changing characters in Super Mario Bros. Wonder is pretty straightforward, but the game never really goes out of its way to explain how to do it.

This guide will focus on the purple Flower Coins scattered throughout the Flower Kingdom. Here, players will learn everything there is to know about this currency introduced in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, including how they can obtain it and what they should do with it.

How to Use Flower Coins

visiting a poplin shop

While regular Coins are useful to increase the number of lives a character has, Flower Coins can be obtained to purchase goodies and unlock parts of the map. Poplins only use Flower Coins, so these characters are one of the main reasons why players should collect Flower Coins in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

There are several Poplin Shops across the Flower Kingdom, and the player can only use Flower Coins to purchase items while in these shops. On top of this, a Poplin will be guarding certain locked areas on the map, and the player must give them Flower Coins so that they can gain the strength required to unlock them.

How to obtain

Large Flower Coin (6 petals)

  • 10 Flower Coins or 3 Flower Coins

A Large Flower Coin is usually worth 10 Flower Coins. However, if the player is replaying a level and collects a Large Flower Coins that they've already picked up before, it'll only be worth 3 Flower Coins. If this is the case, only its outline will appear, and it will be colorless instead of purple.

Most courses have three Large Flower Coins that players can collect. To check, gamers can pause the game after starting a course, and the number of Large Purple Flower coins will appear underneath the Wonder Seed count; it'll also let them know how many they've collected and how many they're still missing.

Regular Flower Coin (4 petals)

  • 1 Flower Coin

Regular-sized Flower Coins are the standard purple Flower Coins that players will come across as they complete a course.

Small Flower Coin (3 petals)

  • 0.1 Flower Coin

The number displayed on the player's Flower Coin count is always rounded down after the Wonder Flower effect ends.

Small Flower Coins appear when the course is under the effect of a Wonder Flower. Since tons of Flower Coins appear during this time, they're worth a lot less than standard Flower Coins.

Players must clear a level in order to keep the coins that they've collected.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
