The final free update for Mario Strikers: Battle League will release soon, and it’s adding two familiar characters. The announcement was made via a trailer showcasing the new characters’ sports talents in action, along with other goodies players can expect.
The Nintendo soccer game, released in June of this year, is the third installment of the video game franchise and the first release since the sequel back in 2007. Despite the blast of nostalgia and praise of the gameplay, Mario Strikers: Battle League has been criticized for its lack of characters in the debut roster. Fortunately for disappointed fans, the game has had several updates that have featured subsequent releases of characters, like Princess Daisy and Shy Guy, with specialty moves that are intended to beef up the game a little and answer players' requests for more variety.
The latest character additions are Bowser Jr. and Birdo. Bowser Jr. focuses more on being a team player and is described as a “balanced player who assists with accurate passes.” On the other hand, Birdo takes on a different approach described as an “offensive force with powerful and precise shots.” The gameplay footage of both characters in the latest Mario Strikers: Battle League trailer proves that both characters would be a great addition to the team, packing a punch no matter what.
Players can also look forward to extra gear and an all-new stadium. The “Shellfish Gear” improves speed and technique. The new stadium is called “Urban Rooftop” and can be used for matches or a player’s club stadium. Unfortunately, nothing else was mentioned, making the Mario Strikers: Battle League update on the small side. Players can expect the Wave 3 update to become available for download on December 13.
With three rounds of character updates and an increase in sporting arena environments and custom gear, Nintendo is officially done with free content releases for the game. It’s a sad announcement for fans of Mario Strikers: Battle League who have been enjoying the game. However, it’s not overly shocking that Nintendo would stop further updates for the game at this stage in its life. It’s up to players to decide if the free updates are enough to stave off disappointment. For now, Mario Strikers: Battle League fans can just enjoy the fact that Bowser Jr. has finally learned to play well with others.
