Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle features a surprisingly large cast of characters, with many familiar Mario faces returning to the screen once more. Though several of the characters in the game - including the titular Mario - can be accessed from the very beginning of the game and don't need to be unlocked, some can only be unlocked through completing specific stages of gameplay.

Unlocking characters in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is still easier than it may seem, as all unlockable characters can be completed by simply playing through the main stages of the game. However, with this guide, the methods and exact stages that players need to complete will hopefully be a lot clearer, making it that much easier to unlock specific characters that players might be interested in.

Mario

Mario is unlocked automatically at the beginning of the game and is one of three initial playable characters alongside Rabbid Luigi and Rabbid Peach.

Mario is the main feature of your team, so it's no surprise he's one of the very first characters players have to play through the game as. He's a pretty useful character overall - depending on which of his weapons fans use, his attacks can be movement-based and will range from mid-range to up-close fighting, though his movement-based attacks can only target two enemies at a time. He's especially good as a front-line fighter, especially with the aforementioned movement-based attacks - they're sure to deal a good amount of damage.

Rabbid Luigi

Rabbid Luigi is unlocked automatically at the beginning of the game. He's another one of three initial playable characters alongside Mario and Rabbid Peach.

With his primary weapon, Rabbid Luigi is a mid-range fighter, just like Mario. However, his secondary weapon is particularly impressive, using a long-range rocket weapon to inflict splash damage that's great for picking off crowds of enemies from afar. Rabbid Luigi is also a good unit to use distinct from the rest of the group: his vamp dash attack means that he'll regain a small amount of health each time he dashes through an enemy, which means he won't be entirely reliant on healing from other parts of the team.

Rabbid Peach

Rabbid Peach is unlocked automatically at the beginning of the game as one of three initial playable characters alongside Mario and Rabbid Luigi.

Rabbid Peach is a very good healer, especially in early-game gameplay. When placed just behind the front lines, she'll do a great job at healing up players' party (as long as they're in range). As well as that, she shines as a support when her dash attack is upgraded to stylish dash, which means she'll be able to hit multiple enemies in one turn. Since she's mostly good as a support rather than a DPS, she's likely to only do a fraction of damage compared to Mario and Rabbid Luigi, but she whittles down enough health that they become an easy kill during the next turn.

Luigi

Luigi is the first unlockable character available in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Players are reunited with him at the end of World 1, Chapter 5 in the chapter aptly named 'Brother, Where Art Thou' after fighting the World 1 mid-boss, and he can be added to the party immediately after being unlocked.

Luigi has the lowest health of all the characters in the game, but he makes up for this with his great Precision weapon range. He's more likely to stay alive because of this increased range, as he's fantastic at doing damage from the back of the party, safe from enemy attacks. Improving his skills will only increase his usefulness in terms of his range and moveability, too.

Rabbid Mario

Rabbid Mario is the second unlockable character available in the game. He is found in a block of ice in World 2, Chapter 3 after fighting the World 2 mid-boss, and he can be added to the party immediately after being unlocked.

Rabbid Mario is the first unlockable front-line fighter, and he fights similarly to his Nintendo namesake, Mario. He fights with movement-based attacks which make him useful against multiple enemies, and he also benefits from a splash attack like Luigi's that makes taking out bunches of enemies super fun. With his short-range primary and his mid-range secondary, he also works well in several positions, making him a very good DPS.

Peach

Peach is the third unlockable character available in the game. Peach will show up at the very end of Chapter 2 to help players fight against the big boss, the Icicle Golem, which will give the player a small demo of what it's like to play with her before she's fully unlocked. (Note, however, that the character in your third slot will be replaced by her after they're thrown into a freezer). She can also be added to the party immediately after being unlocked.

Similar to Rabbid Peach, this Peach is very good as a support. Her primary weapon is a boomshot similar to Rabbid Mario's, but her secondary weapon grenades have an immense range and will allow fans to deal AoE damage to groups of enemies. They won't be the most effective at dealing damage, but they're good at dealing enough to make it easy to get rid of them by using another character. She's also a very good healer, with her healing jump being slightly more effective than Rabbid Peach's.

Rabbid Yoshi

Rabbid Yoshi is the fourth unlockable character available in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. The player will rescue him from the mid-boss carrying him around at the end of World 3, Chapter 5, and he can be added to the party immediately after being unlocked.

Rabbid Yoshi has a dash that impacts up to three enemies, and he throws grenades akin to Peach, making him a useful character regardless of range. That being said, his primary weapon has a good range yet a very unpredictable range of damage. This means it could do far more damage than other characters' weapons, or far less. It's up to the player to see if they want to take the risk of using him.

Yoshi

Yoshi is the fifth and final unlockable character available in the game. He appears at the end of World 4, Chapter 5 after fighting Mecha Jr., and can be added to the party immediately after being unlocked. With Yoshi unlocked, all five of the unlockable base-game characters are available to play.

Yoshi has the attacks and weapons of several other characters, including a movement-based attack similar to Mario and Rabbid Mario and the same primary weapon as Rabbid Yoshi. However, Yoshi makes good use of an AoE ability that makes sure that all other enemies will be able to trigger their super effect on the next turn, as well as an off-turn attack that does pretty decent damage. In this way, he's still a reliable character for both support and attacking playstyles.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is currently available on Switch.
