Mario Party Superstars may not have seen many upgrades as of yet, but there is a very funky option that cannot be ruled out. The latest game in the long-running Mario Party series may have brought back some of the best parts of the series' past, but it is significantly lacking in new content thus far. A few updates and DLC drops could change that, and making the right moves could help Mario Party Superstars symbolize the series' future as well as the past. In fact, one potential addition may add more life to the game than any other.

So far, there are only 10 playable characters in Mario Party Superstars, which consist of the 8 characters who have been in almost every game as well as Rosalina and Birdo. After Super Mario Party had twice as many characters, including unusual picks like Goomba and even Bowser himself, this roster can look quite underwhelming. There are more than enough characters that have participated in past Mario Party titles to fill out the roster, as well as a few new faces that could liven things up. One of the best characters that could make their debut is the Donkey Kong fan favorite Funky Kong.

Funky Kong Would Be A Fantastic Addition To Mario Party Superstars

One argument for Funky Kong is that he is one of the most entertaining characters in the classic Donkey Kong Country series by far. Normally a helpful NPC in DK's adventures, Funky has made a couple of playable crossover appearances in the Mario Kart and Mario Baseball games. True to his name, the perpetually chill surfer ape is always up for a good time, and that has carried over into his other appearances, where he is often one of the most boisterous members of the cast. Few characters would be a better suited for the chaos of Mario Party than the fun-loving Funky.

Funky Kong's memorable personality would make him an easy fit into a Mario Party game. Donkey Kong has been a mainstay of Mario Party since the Nintendo 64, but Funky's own mannerisms would help him stand out on his own. For example, he could celebrate his victories with an excitable handstand or hang ten gesture as opposed to DK's flexing and ape-like poses. Funky could even have notable reactions to losing, as his laid-back nature may keep him from even caring too much about losing out on coins or even a star. He may even offer a disinterested shrug while most characters would panic in the same situation.

Even though Funky isn't Donkey Kong's closest ally, he has the best argument to be a new character in Mario Party Superstars DLC. It took until Funky's debut in DKC: Tropical Freeze to be playable in his home series, which was far too long, and Mario Party shouldn't make that same mistake. Donkey Kong has been a Mario Party mainstay since the beginning, either as a character or board mechanic, and Diddy appeared in a few of the most recent titles. With those two already involved, the bombastic Funky is by far the best Kong candidate to join the party.

Funky Kong has the strongest party vibe out of almost any Nintendo character, so the fact that he has never been invited to Mario Party proper is disappointing to say the least. With rumors of Mario Party Superstars DLC still floating about, there is still a possibility of him making it. Even though there are plenty of Mario Party alums who could also be considered for a playable spot, Funky could make an incredible splash as a newcomer to a game full of classics. With any luck, Mario Party Superstars may one day give Funky Kong an invitation to join the fun.

Mario Party Superstars is currently available for the Nintendo Switch.
