Nintendo has officially released the Version 3.0.1 update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, featuring a variety of fixes to the massively popular racing game. Since the newest entry in the Mario Kart franchise released just over a month after the Switch's launch, the game has stood as arguably the most popular game on the console. A recent report from Nintendo revealed that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the Switch's best-selling game, leading second-place Animal Crossing: New Horizons by more than 14 million units sold. Now, Nintendo is rolling out the next update for the beloved game.

While Mario Kart 8 Deluxe originally served as an enhanced port of the Wii U's Mario Kart 8, Nintendo pumped new life into the game with its first expansion pass. The "Booster Course Pass" for the game has seen a plethora of new characters and courses added to the racing game with more still to come. The full expansion pass saw the addition of a staggering 48 courses to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, along with eight new characters joining the roster. Now, a small new update is coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Update Gets Rid of Controversial Strategy

A recently released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update gets rid of a very popular yet controversial strategy and introduces highly anticipated features.

The Version 3.0.1 update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe officially shipped on Tuesday, making multiple minor changes to address ongoing bugs with the game. Among the biggest fixes within the update was a change to matches with an unstable connection, allowing players to once again claim strong items when not "sandbagging." The patch also addressed numerous bugs with specific courses including Tour Vancouver Velocity, GC DK Mountain, and Wii Daisy Circuit among others. The changes come following the debut of the Booster Course Pass' Wave 6 earlier this month.

Mario Kart 8 Update 3.0.1 Patch Notes

  • Fixed an issue where the player was unable to acquire a strong item even though they did not take an Item Box by stopping or going in reverse during a race, or take an item countless times from an Item Box in same location, when the communication is unstable during an online match.
  • Fixed an issue where the glider did not open when getting on a glide ramp that is past the suspension bridge in Tour Vancouver Velocity
  • Fixed an issue where the player would be floating in mid-air after driving out of the course without being carried back in by Lakitu in GC DK Mountain.
  • Fixed an issue where the player would sometimes not be able to move when riding on the statues in Wii Daisy Circuit.
  • Fixed an issue where actions and expressions did not match for some characters that were added in the Booster Course Pass.
  • Fixed an issue where a Mii’s head would get extremely large or small when playing the highlight reel.

The new fixes to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe come after Nintendo recently addressed a controversial and infamous strategy in the game's previous update. "Sandbagging" has long been a popular strategy within Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with players purposely falling behind in a race in order to acquire more powerful items. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Update 3.0.0 officially removed sandbagging from the game, disabling the ability for players to gain better items from stopping or reversing in a race.

While Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been a sales staple for the Nintendo Switch, last month marked the end of a major streak for the beloved racing game. October 2023 marked the first month since the game's release on Switch that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did not crack the Top 20 best-selling games list for the month. Another Mario game did make the cut with Super Mario Bros. Wonder finishing in second place, just behind Spider-Man 2. Despite the down month, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe should look to maintain its status as one of the Switch's most beloved games.
