Nintendo games typically do a pretty decent job of explaining their core mechanics to players, and Mario Golf: Super Rush is no exception in this regard. Players are made to complete numerous tutorials throughout the game's Golf Adventure mode and there's also an extensive set of guides accessible right from the game's main menu. There are one or two things that players are left to figure out for themselves, however, which can often lead to some silly mistakes being made.

Most of these mistakes probably won't end up being too costly, although some can end up causing players to lose a match or forcing them to replay challenges multiple times in order to right their earlier wrongs. By learning from the mistakes of others though, players can save themselves some time and head out onto the links with all the knowledge they need to see off the competition.

7 Overshooting The Ball

Overshooting the ball in Mario Golf: Super Rush

Unlike more traditional golf games, many of the game types in Mario Golf: Super Rush require players to manually make their way to their ball before they can take their next shot. Providing they have stamina available, they can either sprint to the ball by holding the A button or use a special dash by tapping the ZL trigger.

Generally speaking, the latter is the better option, although it can be a little problematic in certain situations. Some characters jump forward at the end of their special dash and can therefore hop straight over the ball forcing players to backtrack. Even if the character doesn't jump, if the player's ball is still moving when they reach it, their character will keep on running, once again wasting valuable time.

6 Mistiming Special Dashes

The reason that special dashes are so useful for getting around is that they also function as an attack of sorts. As well as being able to move other players' balls, dashing directly into another player will cause them to fall over and drop a significant portion of their coins in the process. As with most things in golf though, timing can be important.

If a player crashes into another player while they are already in position to strike their ball, it is they, not the person they crash into, who will fall down and lose coins. Special dashing too early can also lead to the animation ending before damaging the target, effectively wasting a perfectly good opportunity to slow the competition down.

5 Becoming Too Powerful Too Quickly

Leveling up in Mario Golf: Super Rush

Each time a player levels up their Mii golfer they will be given a stat point to spend. Unlike most other games, however, certain stats are tied to others, with an increase in power often leading to a decrease somewhere else. Some players may think they're being smart by dumping points into their golfer's shot power early on to avoid unnecessary deductions, but this can cause big problems a little later on.

Though it isn't possible for attributes to fall below one, players with high power levels will find that increasing the level of other attributes can often take four or five stat points to accomplish. This can make Speed Golf challenges incredibly difficult, particularly the one against Luigi and Donkey Kong at Wildweather Woods. As such, it's best to raise every attribute together and top up any that need it whenever they start to fall.

4 Ignoring The Weather Conditions

The Wildweather Woods course in Mario Golf: Super Rush

The first two courses in Mario Golf: Super Rush lull players into a false sense of security when it comes to weather, with no rain or storms in sight and winds rarely picking up above 10 mph. This all changes pretty quickly once players arrive at Ridgerock Lake for their first taste of XC Golf, however, and things only get worse from there on out.

Failing to account for strong winds or the effects of rain on a fairway or green can very easily cost players a stroke; more if their lapse in judgement happens to take their ball out of bounds. With that in mind, players should be sure to keep an eye on weather conditions at all times and make adjustments to shot power and direction whenever required.

3 Skipping Over Instructions

Instructions in Mario Golf: Super Rush

Many of the challenges in Mario Golf: Super Rush's Golf Adventure mode are incredibly similar and are usually made clear at the top of the screen once play gets underway. Some impatient players may therefore get the urge to skip over the dialogue so as to get straight into the action, but doing so can easily backfire.

Certain challenges offer slight variations to the standard clear requirements and don't mention this at the top of the screen. Granted, it is possible to complete most of the game simply by getting a low score and finishing each hole as quickly as possible, but there are a few times when players will need to do something slightly differently in order to emerge victorious.

2 Bringing The Wrong Equipment

While it is possible to unlock new sets of clubs for regular play, players won't really need to worry too much about what's in their golf bag outside of Golf Adventure mode. Here, however, packing the right clubs for the course can be vital to a player's success and taking too many can slow them down quite a lot while they're out on the links.

It's not just clubs that players need to worry about either. Each of the hub worlds in Golf Adventure mode features a store from which players can use their coins to buy new outfits, clubs and accessories. The outfits on sale typically offer passive perks designed to make the hub world's course a little easier, so buying and equipping these items is a must for those looking to gain an advantage.

1 Trying To Fill The Shot Power Bar To The Very Top

The more powerful a shot, the more likely it is to spin off in Mario Golf: Super Rush

Most players will no doubt have noticed the small red triangles at the top of their shot power bar by now. Stopping the bar within these triangles increases the likelihood of the ball spinning off to the left or right if a player's second button press isn't perfectly timed. Those with great timing don't need to worry about this too much, but everybody else should avoid this area of the bar whenever possible.

This needn't come at the expense of distance, though, as in most situations players will be able to select a more powerful club to make up any distance lost. If players do really need to use every drop of power at their disposal they can always use their special shot instead. These aren't affected by spin, although players will need to fill their special shot meter before they can use it.
