  • LEGO Super Mario's popularity leads to potential announcements for new sets during Mario Day 2024, alongside rumored sets from other Nintendo properties.

Fans could be getting a new LEGO Super Mario announcement during the annual Mario Day celebration later this month. Every year on March 10, Nintendo holds special events and discounts in honor of the iconic Super Mario Bros. franchise, and this year’s festivities could include release dates for previously announced Switch titles like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.

Meanwhile, LEGO and Nintendo have had a successful partnership ever since the first LEGO Super Mario sets were released in the summer of 2020. This initial wave of playsets featured an interactive board game in which players guided an electronic Mario figure through courses inspired by classic Super Mario levels. Over the past couple of years, LEGO introduced Super Mario expansion sets centered around popular characters like Luigi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong, with the latest kit being based on Bowser and his dreaded muscle car from Super Mario 3D World.

After Super Mario Bros. Wonder, The Franchise Needs to Hop on One Industry Trend

With the success of Super Mario Bros. Wonder behind it, the franchise needs to consider embracing one industry trend in its next steps forward.

Even more exciting LEGO Super Mario news could be coming on March 9, the day before this year’s Mario Day event. This was hinted at in a brief trailer on the official LEGO YouTube account, in which a host is interrupted by someone before he can even finish his introduction. The screen cuts to black as the host asks “How did they get in?,” implying that this new LEGO Super Mario announcement could be centered around a villainous group of characters like Wario and his equally unscrupulous sidekick Waluigi.

Nintendo And LEGO’s Partnership Is Building

LEGO Super Mario is only the first piece in the growing partnership between Nintendo and LEGO, as sets based on various other Nintendo properties have either been released or rumored in the wake of the Mario line’s success. Last fall, LEGO announced a collection of Animal Crossing sets, which eventually launched earlier this month. Back in January, a leak hinted at a Legend of Zelda set inspired by the Great Deku Tree, though nothing official has come of it yet. In the meantime, Nintendo IPs like Pokemon remain a popular source of homemade LEGO models.

LEGO Super Mario remains popular among fans of both properties, and there could be even more exciting news during this year’s Mario Day festivities. Of course, the brief teaser didn’t provide much in terms of what fans can expect, but it looks like a new LEGO Super Mario set could be announced at the very least. The answer will come on March 9, right at the beginning of the Mario Day 2024 celebration.

Super Mario

Super Mario is one of the biggest names in gaming. The first game in the franchise was 1985's Super Mario Bros., a game that is credited with helping the gaming industry recover from its two-year crash that began in 1983.

The Super Mario series still has an important place in gaming today, largely thanks to Nintendo's ability to continuously innovate the platform games.
