When The Mandalorian first began streaming on Disney+ in 2019, the series was a breath of fresh air for many fans of the Star Wars brand. Taking on more of a western genre influence rather than the traditional sci-fi fantasy of the films, The Mandalorian offered a new perspective to the Star Wars universe, and since its release many fans have been wondering what a game based on it would look like.

The series naturally lends itself to the conceits required by a possible video game adaptation, as the show follows the titular Mandalorian, Din Djarin, a bounty hunter by trade. Games like The Witcher 3 prove that giving the protagonist a profession in this style is the perfect set up for a AAA game allowing for hundreds of compelling side quests. The Mandalorian is also equipped with numerous gadgets and equipment, which is acquired and upgraded as the show continues, just like the character progression found in many video games.

According to Nick Baker, the co-founder of XboxEra, a Mandalorian video game based on the show is in development. Rumors on a Mandalorian game have been circulating for a while, but there have been no concrete announcements, or even information on which studio is developing the project. Baker claims to have a lot of information on the game but is holding off on revealing more until the game's developer is revealed.

Speculation about which studio the project will go to began after EA lost its exclusivity deal to make games for the Star Wars brand. EA is still reportedly working on a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order which is speculated to be shown off at some point this year. It is also reported that Ubisoft is working on an unannounced Star Wars project and The Mandalorian would fit Ubisoft's brand of open world games. Ubisoft will also be keen to impress as a successful Star Wars title could lead to it becoming Disney's go-to developer for the title, in the same way Insomniac is for Marvel games. Though it is unlikely Disney will ever lock itself into another exclusivity deal.

As for the game, it is unlikely to be a retelling of the show's story, as Star Wars is no stranger to having games like Jedi: Fallen Order and other multimedia projects be part of the franchise canon, as evidence by the Star Wars comics and The Mandalorian itself. It's possible the game could be a prequel to the events of the show, set back when Din was purely a bounty hunter, perhaps even taking place before the collapse of the empire, which the show is set just after.

The game’s position in the canon of The Mandalorian will most likely come down to how positive the reception is. If the game is panned it will most likely never be mentioned in the show, but if it is well received Disney may reference events or bring back characters from the game.
