Fans who are awaiting the release of the next season of TheMandalorian can take some enjoyment from the behind-the-scenes news that's dropping. Recently, Giancarlo Esposito talked about how he wasn't aware of Luke Skywalker's return even as filming was underway.

The Mandalorian's second season brought out some heavy-hitting changes that will seriously affect the show moving forward. Things will not be the same for The Mandalorian season 3 and the show has also brought out more iconic characters from the animated Clone Wars series, which fans have been enjoying.

During the climax of The Mandalorian's season 2 finale, Luke Skywalker made a surprise appearance to rescue Grogu and the cornered heroes. The character's return was just as surprising to fans as it was for the actors who were part of the scene. Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the antagonistic Moff Gideon, pointed out how surprising it was for him to see Luke return. Speaking to Screen Rant, the actor said, "I got to tell you, they're so good at keeping secrets and allowing us to know just enough, but not enough to be able to really get what's happening. None of us knew. I mean, it is such a great thing that they're able to keep the lid on that." The actor continues, "I know that they trusted us to not let it out in the world, but I think by virtue of the fact that it was such a secret, it also gave us the ability to surprise ourselves."

The Mandalorian Star Wars Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker's return was achieved through a combination of Mark Hamill's performance and the wonders of digital de-aging. Because Hamill was older than Luke is supposed to be in The Mandalorian (which takes place not long after Return of the Jedi) a double was also used for certain portions of the Jedi Master's fight scene. The end result was a triumphant return for the classic Star Wars hero, who many felt was not given his due in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Because few saw Luke Skywalker's return coming, the reveal was really appreciated by fans. Many other creators should take notes as to how Disney and Lucasfilm kept a tight-knit secret, especially since it seems like a story about a leak from a movie set comes out every other day.

Keeping the surprise is a big part of the enjoyment for fans who go to watch a film or TV show. Trailers should aim to do better at keeping many things behind closed doors so fans don't know what to expect or know when a specific scene will happen. However, for other fans, the leaks and reveals prior to the release help build the suspense. It's a matter of preference, so hopefully, there comes a point when there's a better balance.

The Mandalorian seasons 1-2 are now available on Disney Plus.
