The Next Madden Game Has a Unique Problem

The next Madden title will be forced to face a bizarre conundrum, one that's actually been telegraphed for just over a decade.

Building on the anticipation for Madden 25, EA released new information about the game, showcasing what separates it from previous entries. The biggest change comes with the introduction of BOOM tech. BOOM tech is a dynamic physics-based tackling system that will change the way tackle animations are done in Madden. According to EA, this revamped physics system will give a new level of ball carrier control. The Hit Stick mechanic has also been overhauled thanks to BOOM tech. Hit Stick now uses a timing-based mechanic to allow players more control over movements in the game.

New Gameplay Changes Coming to Madden 25

  • Physics-Based Tackling: Cut loose and attack the ball with powerful Hit Sticks, Cut Sticks, trucks, dives, and stiff arms with more control and realism than ever. A new data-driven physics system considers timing, momentum, weight, speed, strength, and player ratings to inform 1-on-1 ball carrier impact for a wider variety of explosive and authentic physical outcomes.
  • Reloaded Hit Stick: Bring power in every phase of the game. The re-engineered Hit Stick uses a timing-based mechanic to provide more control determined by your angle of impact, stick skill, and accuracy for cut sticks, big hits, and trucks, with more realistic physical movements and results.
  • Ball Carrier Control: Run the rock with unparalleled confidence and command with the new Ball Carrier Balance and Recovery System. Feel the impact of every hit and experience the thrill of breaking tackles like never before with more realistic and dynamic ball carrier experience. Absorb big hits, regain your balance, and continue the drive, all based on the intensity of the collision and the ratings of the players involved.
  • Foundational Football: The latest additions to FieldSENSE™ deliver increased authenticity in all three phases of the game – offense, defense, and special teams – to celebrate and reward fans' love of the NFL. New team-specific plays from some of the NFL's most innovative play-callers bring enhanced strategy and gameplay variety, including the new NFL hybrid kickoff. Signature pre- and post-snap animations deliver a new level of immersion, and all-new skill-mechanics for ball carriers, receivers, and defenders provide players with ultimate control across the field.

Madden 25 Game Modes

  • Presentation: Play by play never sounded so good with two additional commentary teams – Mike Tirico & Greg Olsen, and Kate Scott & Brock Huard – across the game plus fresh pregame montages, camera angles, environments, Super Bowl celebrations, and immersive audio that looks, feels, and sounds different at every level.

Progress through divisions to gauge success; only the best of the best will qualify for a spot in the elite Top 100 division (on PS5®, Xbox Series X|S and PC).

In addition to BOOM tech, Madden's signature FieldSENSE has been improved. New plays specific to certain teams and play-callers are being added, adding an extra layer of strategy and variety to the game. The new rules coming in the upcoming NFL season are also being implemented into Madden, including the new hybrid kickoff. Also being added are new signature animations and new skill-mechanics for all positions to ensure maximum control for the player. All of these new changes are designed to ensure the best player experience and to push Madden ahead in the world of sports games.

Madden 25 is only one of two new football games EA is releasing this summer. In addition to the yearly Madden release, EA is launching a brand-new entry in its College Football franchise. Fans can expect College Football25 to have many of the same tweaks to gameplay that Madden 25 is getting. For many, playing the new Madden game is a yearly tradition. Now, players will get to continue that with Madden 25 while also getting a new entry in a franchise that's been dormant for a decade.

Madden NFL 25 launches August 16 and College Football 25 launches July 19. This gives players nearly a month to play collegiate football before moving on to the National Football League.
